Not a lot of "new" new stuff this week, but plenty of cool older
material that's recently found it's way into the bag....to paraphrase
a large media conglomerate, "if you haven't heard it, it's new to
you!"
On the QT and very hush hush: This week we'll take a sneak peak at
two new Ninja Tune albums. The first is "Something Wicked This Way
Comes" from The Herbaliser, who have done a superb job of recreating
the energy of their live performances in the studio. Imagine Tower of
Power gone hip-hop with a bit of the odd snippet of movie dialogue
tossed in for grins and you'll have an idea of what it's all about.
The other gem is "Talkatif," the forthcoming album from Antibalas.
The spirit of Fela is strong in the seven tracks I've heard and the
musicianship is tight. They're currently on tour, so don't pass on
your chance to catch some amazing live Afrobeat if they make it to
your neighborhood.
"Denials, Delusions and Decisions" is the new CD from Jaguar Wright
and yet another affirmation that the new soul movement is more
powerful than ever. About 18 months ago I predicted Jill Scott would
become a major star in the R&B world and this year I feel the same
about Ms. Wright. She's both sassy and sexy and unafraid to speak her
mind. Soon to be a classic.
I'm not a big fan of trance and it's for that reason I approached the
new Timo Maas album with some trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised
to find that about half the disc contained some excellent downtempo
tracks and others that managed to rise above the more "generic"
compositions. "Loud" is out in mid-March...
As for the rest, you'll have to tune in tonight or catch the Live365
re-run next week.
Ciao for now,
David
