Matthew K DJ Chart 5th Febuary 2002
1. Klaus Doldinger: Passport Remix 12" (Warners)
Promo only 4 track vinyl with some amazing re-interpretations of this old
jazz artist. Really going for the Rainer Truby mix but with the likes of
Fauna Flash and Marsmobil also here, this is a must have.
2. The Shiba Experiment: Hanadokei EP (Bambola)
Fantastic future jazz house from Japan. With 3 excellent tracks on offer,
the forthcoming compilation on Bambola should be something special.
3. Su Paka Pooh: Theme De Yo-Yo (Disorient)
More Japanese buisness with a truly amazing re-interpretation of the old Art
Ensemble of Chicago classic. Been floating about on a Flower CDr for ages
now, well done to the Disorient crew for getting this out.
4. Telefuzz: Sleep (Upstairs Recordings)
Hailing from Canada, this is one of the most exciting labels around. 3
tracks of synth led chilled grooves from Telefuzz and a bonus track from Ed
Swankz, this will surprise many by its sheer beauty. For those who haven't
heard - check out the 2 awesome 'Deepdown Tempos' compilations from this
label.
5. Femi Kuti: Do Your Best - Remixes (Barclay)
With a special guest appearance from Mos Def and Faze Action on remix
duties, this is the best afro beat release in a long time. Very tasty double
pack.
6. Nu Spirit Helsinki: Album Promo (CDr)
Only 100 in circulation and forthcoming on Guidance, this is already going
to be one of the years best albums and we are only in January. Watch out for
it.
7. Aqua Bassino: Beat's N Bobs (F Com)
The longest wait for a second album since the Stone Roses is over and its
been worth the wait. Here Edinburgh's finest moves on from his highly
individual style to include some jaw dropping vocal tracks. What an album.
8. Koop: Waltz For Koop (JCR)
Long awaited and finally released, this is a truly sublime album that sets
the pace for 2002. Hopefuly this album will cross over like Zero 7 has, as
it has the potential to be BIG.
9. Funky Lowlives: Remixes (Stereo Deluxe)
While the original came out on G Stone, these 2 amazing dubby remixes from
Boozoo Bajou and Richard Dorfmeister are commissioned to Stereo Deluxe for
their best release in a long time.
10. Mr Hermano: Free As the Morning Sun - Remix (Disorient)
The now legendary 'Free As The Morning Sun' gets a house reworking from
Scumfrog, but its the more chilled tracks on the flip that are getting the
most use for me.
11. Trouble Man: Where We Stand / Lullaby (Far Out)
Mark Pritchard has been on a bit of a roll of late and this is another fine
example of his production skills. This is future music and demands to be
heard.
12. Fenomenon: Visjon Nord EP (Nuphonic)
One of Nuphonic's brightest hopes give us their second EP after a long wait.
Its worth it though with a varied selection ranging from the jazzy downtempo
grooves, bossa beats and a remix from Compost's Butti 49.
13. Dub War: Murderous Style / Generation (Tempa)
Thanks to Dave at In Spirit for helping me track this label down. Stunning
dubby 2 step that erupts on a loud system. Tempa is the label to watch for
2002, along with the fab Horsepower productions and Ghost crew. This demands
to be heard.
14. Horsepower Productions: Electro Bass (Turn U On)
More dubby 2 step buisness from Nico's new label. This is some of the best
music being made today. Highly recommended.
15. Art Konik: Finger - UFO Mix (Comet)
Straight to the UFO mix for yet more evidence of their mastery at music.
Keeping to a house tempo, this will be a favourite for a while.
16. Various: Make Music (Harmless)
Hard to believe, but this may just be the greatest of all the Harmless
comiplations. Including original tracks covered by the likes of 4 Hero, Zero
7 and Natural Calamity, this shows that todays chill out scene isn't that
far away from some of the late 60's / early 70's more adventurous
productions.
17. Jazzanova: That Night / Days To Come (JCR)
Long awaited, this is very special indeed. Much more dancefloor than I was
expecting and with Victer Duplaix on vocals, this shows how far ahead of the
game these Germans are. Can't wait for the album.
18. India Irie / Eric Sermon: Bootleg 12" (White)
With a Naked style house mix of Irie's sublime 'Brown Skin' and an
instrumental mix (except the Marvin Gaye vocal sample) of Eric Sermon's
'Music', this will be in the box for a while.
19. Fug: Thin Air (Nuphonic)
A perfect meeting of minds with the delightful At Jazz reworking the
gorgeous Fug. Chilled to the max, this will appeal to all the old soul boys.
20. Slop Shop: Blue Angel (Poets Club Records)
Don't know anything about this crew but features a lovely jazz groover
remixed by Atomhokey, while Sir Brian Eno goes all dark ambient on the flip.
21. Frankie Valentine: Below The Radar (Sunshine Enterprises)
One of the forgotten heroes of the nu-house sound of the mid 90's hits back
with a highly musical long player from the excellent Sunshine Enterprises
label.
22.Subway: Subway Tracks EP (Nuphonic)
Very Idjut Boys sounding, with some of the best house music around. 4 tracks
full of funky rhythms and big basslines.
23. Transcendent Minds: Lunar Visions EP (Karma Giraffe)
From the label that brought us IG Culture's 'Inspirations' album, we get 2
synth heavy, jazzy breakbeat numbers from DJ Dextrous.
24. Sandor Caron: Agenda (Music For Speakers)
This would be a classic for the vinyl appearance of the title track off his
recent CD only album. However with an awe inspiring mix from Sonar Lodge
also included, this is essential.
25. Dining Rooms: Sei Tu / Cosi Tii Amo - Remixes (Schema)
Gorgeous 12" featuring 2 stunning remixes from the Fragment Orchestra and
Four Tet, both very different and both brilliant. This is the way all music
should sound.
26. Artless: 2nd Room (Schema)
Schema are currently on a roll and this is yet another classic. Starting off
with a garage bassline and 2 step beats, this builds up into 4/4 action.
27. The Originals / Eddie Kendricks: Re-Edits (Duotone)
Don't have much info on this or for how long its been floating about, but
totally worthy of inclusion. Two old 70's classics fantasticly reworked and
re-edited by Dimitri From Paris. Falling somewhere between Philly soul and
early disco, this is a gem.
28. Jaam: Blue Series EP Vol. 2 (Mutant Soul)
This is building into a nice little label. With Mr. Alex Attias on remix
duties for the A side, this is already a firm favourite. Also contains two
excellent interpretations from Rollercone.
29. Gak Sato: Tanagram - Remixes (Temposphere)
The Italian scene is the one to look out for in 2002, with loads of artists
and labels leading the way. This is sublime with remixes from Ninja Tunes'
Flanger and a highly musical mix from Japan's Yukihiro Fukutomi.
30. Mono Deluxe: Go EP & Unreleased Material (CDr)
Thanks for this lovely collection of chilled grooves. The 'Go' EP should
appear soon and the other tracks demand a proper release.
This chart is sent to hundereds of press publications, magazines, labels,
