Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #75: Jazzscapes for daydreamers

    Newsflash 06.02.2002

    Dear friends,

Here comes the latest edition of da brothaz' xtra long newsletter! Another weeks have passed but what a change: I just finished my studies on the university last week! So from now on I don't have to worry about the exams and I can concentrate more on music. Check out the latest mix to catch the positive vibes in the studio. This latest session turned into a virtual party as inside the building of the radio a couple of people had a smaller party and after a while they just started broadcasting the program of the radio.

In the mix you'll hear some new works of our close friends from Veszprem. The easy Life Natural guys just get better and better with every single tune. I hope they can finally find a good label to release their works. In the next few weeks hopefully I can write a few positive news about releasing some of our friends' works. First of all we are really glad to announce that in a few days Fluid Ounce will release Marcel's Nujazzkilla tune under his Carmel alias. He is now signed to Good Looking Records, but he can release his weirder stuff elsewhere, too. We played this wicked track for many months from CDR and it's good to know that with our help this music has found its best place.

No extra reading for this week, but here comes the first chart of Shuriken with his latest favourites. Enjoy! Anyway, all of you are welcome on the next days' parties (check the dates below) either in London or in Budapest!

Keep on groovin' till next week!

    Keyser (Crate Soul Brothers)

DJ Shuriken (London/Budapest) chart for February 2002
    No - Artist - Title - Label

    1. Arkestra 1 - Train to Machu Pichu - Cosmic Sounds
This formation will storm the music scene all over the globe if there is just a bit of rightousness left in this crazy world we live in. Arkestra 1 brings supreme sample based jazzscapes for daydreamers, spiced up with the sweet voice of Nina Miranda (this lady is probably best known for her involvment in Smoke City). This 12" is already bringing us a lot of joy, but watch out till you hear their debut album, Skydiving (scheduled 2002 April), because it really is the most exciting and charming full length we've heard for quite a while. We hope this album finally brings the well deserved attention to Zeljko Kerleta's Cosmic Sounds label (www.cosmicsounds-london.com), known for its quality Eastern European jazz from the past and present.

    2. Trouble Man - Where We Stand - Far Out
We guess most of you know this 12" by now. We still can't get enough of it. Raw, twisted nu jazz beats, to mash up the dancefloor anywhere. See it? Grab it!

    3. Treva Whateva - Singalong - Tru Thoughts
The Brighton based Tru Thoughts label is consequently delivers head nodding, funk fuelled, crispy breakbeat driven tunes, and we wonder how long they can keep this excellence of quality. Ooops, Treva did it again!!! When the silly vocal sample kicks in, the crowd goes wild, shakes booties and sings along. Just ask our fellow Crate Soul Brother, Mr Erik Szamovar (aka Tristram Shandy aka whatever silly name he just invents this month). He knows.

    4. Koop - Waltz For Koop - JCR
Can't stop listening to this album. Punk looking jazzors Straight outta Sweden, they came a long way to tell their beautiful, touching story. Smooth as a summer night. Bitterweet as a half remembered dream.

    5. Jazzanova - That Night - JCR
And the magic happened that night. Ohh man! How deep can they get? We can't quite follow the complexity of the flipside (Days to Come), but That Night takes us back in time to that night. That night that changed everything.

    6. RJD2 - Here's What's Left - Altered Vibes
Need a head nodding hip hip hop beat with cracklingly emotional samples that put you on the verge of crying? This piece of plastic certainly does the soul surgery. Shuriken misses his baby girl and listens to RJD2 (what a name for an artist?)

    7. Modul - Hip Hop Dog - CD-R
Modul aka dj Mango is Hungary's supreme turntablist veteran, streetwise selector of hip hop, drum n bass, nu skool brakes, dancehall reggae and god knows how many styles, and yes, he's our favourite Hungarian producer at the moment. This time he breaks our neck with a tune, you'd save for the days when you finally cruise the hot Californian roads with your low rider. Teaming up with human beat box MC Busa (doesn't just flip the beat anyway he wanna, does scratches and backspins that confuse even pro turntablists), Modul brings out the hip hop dog when the sun is about to set. Budapest's dub/prog breakbeat specialits Chi Recordings put the tune on some 12" comp lately, we heard. Go, look for it, before we find it!

    8. Snorre Seim - Brassespark - Hifi Therapy
Norway isn't that far from Hungary, when it comes to driving rhythms! We understand the message and dig Brassespulsatingbass. Nu jazz fusion, to make you sweat. Keep on Snorre!

    9. Aim - Hinterland (Sampler) - Grand Central
Aim is back with a vengeance. This album sampler promises a diverse album, from hip hop (feat Souls of Mischief, nahmean?) to choped up funk breaks to sad female vocals (Kate Rogers). Don't go out in the cold! Flip the record over, put the needle back to the record again, and chill in.

    10. VA - Turntables Over The Hudson vol 3. - Rhythmlove
Third in the series and still going strong. Not like Hollywood follow ups. Your world vibes, your funk beats, your dubby atmosphere, their love for these rhythms. Nickodemus and Mariano present another splendid collection of the finest bits doing the rounds in New York's jazzelectric underground. Yellow cabs pass you by on your way to your local soul-food joint for some sonic sofritos.

    11. Solar Apple - Qarktette Flight 2 - Further Out
    12. Archie Shepp - Mozambique (Sun Tools RMX) - MoSmog
    13. UKO - Automatik - Klein
    14. Gerardo Frisina - Saeta - Schema
    15. VA - Jack to Phono - Jacques Laverne
    16. Art Konik - Finger (UFO RMX) - Comet
    17. Kabuki - Tempest (At Jazz RMX) - IRMA
    18. Cuica - Trommel Monster - Ubiquity
    19. Xploding Plastix - Treat Me Mean - Hospital
    20. Paradox - Paragon of Virtue - Archive
    21. D'Angelo - Da Joint - ?
    22. Jon Kennedy - We Are Just Waiting For You Now - Tru Thoughts
    23. VA - Bazaar (Rare polish jazz/fusion) - Cosmic Sounds
    24. VA - Heavyweight Ribticklers - Unfold
    25. VA - 12 Cuts of the pie - Humble
