MOMENTUM: SATURDAY MARCH 2nd @ THE SHADOW LOUNGE
PITTSBURGH, PA -- Element 5 presents "MOMENTUM",
Saturday March 2nd, 2002 at The Shadow Lounge in
Pittsburgh, PA. Jazz, Poetics, Movement, Soul Train,
Technoir nucleate in warm fusion for a unique night of
live music and good vibrations. The night will feature
a silky blend of live improv performances by Shawn
Rudiman, Moonstarr, Titonton Duvante, Soy Sos,
Christiane Leach, UltraViolet Trio [Nathan Peck,
Colter Harper, Dave Throckmorton], Intellect,
Technoir-Audio with a special appearance by Ed Luna.
"We organized this night to showcase the underground
soul in this city," said Ashwin Tumne, a volunteer for
the Element 5 project. "A diverse group of
accomplished musicians will be jamming along side the
city's best DJs to create, in unison with the crowd, a
special vibe we hope will last well after the night."
Element 5 was created as a hub for some of the musical
and cultural movements that have been growing in
Pittsburgh in recent years. "A lot of cultural
activities in this city too often go unnoticed," said
Soy Sos, one of the artists performing at the Saturday
event and a member of local band Soma Mestizo.
"Momentum is an attempt to address that issue. We've
worked hard to bring together elements representing
the diversity of soul culture under one house."
"We're excited about participating in this event,"
said Moonstarr, electronic music composer and founder
of music label Public Transit Recordings, based in
Toronto, Canada. "We've visited and performed in
Pittsburgh on several occasions and we've always had a
great time there. We've heard a lot of good things
about the Shadow Lounge and it seems like the perfect
spot for this multi-level intersection of people,
places, and ideas."
The live musical performances for Momentum will
include an intricate improv mix of Jazz, Hip-hop, Rare
Groove, Spoken word, House, African Drumming, and
Detroit Techno. "It's all about the Funk, baby,"
states Shawn Rudiman, co-founder of local music label
Technoir-Audio whose trademark live performance has
earned much praise from many quarters, including
Detroit Techno veteran Anthony 'Shake' Shakir.
Jwan Allen, local DJ and co-founder of Technoir-Audio,
describes this musical mix further. "The line between
musical genres, like say, House and Techno is often
blurred. These musical movements, like jazz and blues,
share common roots dating back hundreds of years to
west Africa and beyond. When you dance to my beat,
you're really participating in a ritual that's
timeless in the human experience."
In addition to the music, Momentum also represents a
new way of experiencing the urban flavors present in
Pittsburgh. "We hope to evolve this night into a
multi-dimensional event," states Christiane Leach,
singer of Soma Mestizo and executive director of Sun
Crumbs, a local non-profit artistic and cultural
organization. "In addition to the artistry of the
music that will be showcased Saturday, we also wish to
connect the growth of arts and culture to the urban
development of Pittsburgh."
That connection is expressed by the support of the
many collectives who have lent their support for the
March 2nd night, including groups such as Ground Zero,
Sun Crumbs, 7th Movement, WRCT 88.3 FM, Bridge
Spotters, local independent DJ shops [720 records,
Hypervinyl, Milk Records], Technoir-Audio, Public
Transit Recordings from Toronto, Canada and Ele-mental
from Columbus, OH.
"We hope to shine a spotlight on the many lesser known
cultural scenes that have a home in Pittsburgh," said
Ashwin Tumne. "We hope that people will not only check
out the event we're putting on at the Shadow Lounge
this Saturday, but also take a moment to discover the
many creative endeavors happening in this city."
Momentum will be taking place Saturday, March 2nd,
2002 at the Shadow Lounge. Doors open at 9pm. The
Shadow Lounge is located at 5972 Baum Blvd at the
intersection of Baum and S. Highland in the city of
bridges [Pittsburgh, PA].
