There are two kinds of year-end charts: the statistical kind and the
kind based purely on opinion. It's the latter that spurs debates and
discussion regarding the author's sanity, taste (good & bad), etc.
and gives us something to do as the year draws to a close.
As I started to compile the FreeFall year-end list, I realized that:
a) I would have way more music than I could play over the course of
two programs and b) this was my list and I wasn't bound by any
outside constraints with regard to form.
I decided that the most important criteria was quality. Could I
recommend these albums to a friend, colleague or stranger who was
contemplating shelling out $15-20 on an unknown artist? In all cases,
the answer was yes - in my opinion, each of the records below could
stand on their own as complete works - not collections of filler
designed to pad out one or two good tunes.
Some artists were played extensively. Others were not, but deserved
way more airplay than I could give them in the course of two hours a
week. I felt that they deserved some kind of recognition, even if it
were only in the context of this chart. If you haven't heard some of
the albums or singles listed here, I hope you'll have the opportunity
to do so in the months to come.
Before I head out to partake of this evening's festivities, I'd like
to wish all of you the best for 2002. The past year has been a
difficult one for many of us, but I'd like to believe that adversity
has made us stronger and more able to deal with the challenges that
lie ahead.
Thanks again for all your support - Happy New Year!
David
