anyone heard a d a m EMAIL souljazz goldstone's 'lower east side stories' on nuphonic? the
review i read made it sound really good (natch) but i had a lissen to it
and it didn't grab me. sure i understand that its meant to be a thematic
collection of music related to the lower east side of NY in the early '80s
- dub, house, disco, hip hop, cinematic sleaze, but to me it sounded very
much like the result of a studio producer's concept, a bit sterile and a
long way from the funk & soul & er grittiness that you'd find in the actual
music from that time. but i guess that's unavoidable, and come to think of
it, i've had the same reaction to other similar 'nostalgia' productions,
i.e. sylk 130. i guess you just can't capture the things that make music
from a different place & time special & unique. hmmm i can't remember if
there was a point to this or not...
