Matthew K DJ Chart 23rd January 2002
1. Dub War: Murderous Style / Generation (Tempa)
Thanks to Dave at In Spirit for helping me track this label down. Stunning
dubby 2 step that erupts on a loud system. Tempa is the label to watch for
2002, along with the fab Horsepower productions and Ghost crew. This demands
to be heard.
2. Horsepower Productions: Electro Bass (Turn U On)
More dubby 2 step buisness from Nico's new label. This is some of the best
music being made today. Highly recommended.
3. Art Konik: Finger - UFO Mix (Comet)
Straight to the UFO mix for yet more evidence of their mastery at music.
Keeping to a house tempo, this will be a favourite for a while.
4. Various: Make Music (Harmless)
Hard to believe, but this may just be the greatest of all the Harmless
comiplations. Including original tracks covered by the likes of 4 Hero, Zero
7 and Natural Calamity, this shows that todays chill out scene isn't that
far away from some of the late 60's / early 70's more adventurous
productions.
5. Mos Def: Umi Says - Zero 7 Mix (CDr)
Thanks to the fantastic new Morpheus shareware program (the new Napster) I
tracked down this absolute gem. Probably the best remix Zero 7 have done,
which is quite a challenge considering their past works, this should be the
new James Bond theme.
6. Jazzanova: That Night / Days To Come (JCR)
Long awaited, this is very special indeed. Much more dancefloor than I was
expecting and with Victer Duplaix on vocals, this shows how far ahead of the
game these Germans are. Can't wait for the album.
7. India Irie / Eric Sermon: Bootleg 12" (White)
With a Naked style house mix of Irie's sublime 'Brown Skin' and an
instrumental mix (except the Marvin Gaye vocal sample) of Eric Sermon's
'Music', this will be in the box for a while.
8. Transcendent Minds: Lunar Visions EP (Karma Giraffe)
From the label that brought us IG Culture's 'Inspirations' album, we get 2
synth heavy, jazzy breakbeat numbers from DJ Dextrous.
9. Sandor Caron: Agenda (Music For Speakers)
This would be a classic for the vinyl appearance of the title track off his
recent CD only album. However with an awe inspiring mix from Sonar Lodge
also included, this is essential.
10. Dining Rooms: Sei Tu / Cosi Tii Amo - Remixes (Schema)
Gorgeous 12" featuring 2 stunning remixes from the Fragment Orchestra and
Four Tet, both very different and both brilliant. This is the way all music
should sound.
11. Harmonic 33: Kaleidoscope Sounds EP (Alphabet Zoo)
Been out for a while now but only just tracked it down, this is Mark
Pritchard in a down tempo mood. Six tracks of utterly sublime beauty - chill
out doesn't get any better than this.
12. The Originals / Eddie Kendricks: Re-Edits (Duotone)
Don't have much info on this or for how long its been floating about, but
totally worthy of inclusion. Two old 70's classics fantasticly reworked and
re-edited by Dimitri From Paris. Falling somewhere between Philly soul and
early disco, this is a gem.
13. Ladyipb: Communication (Nuphonic)
One of the most trusted labels around brings us another gem. Retaining that
early 80's flavour, this is in the same mould as the recent Adam Goldstone
single.
14. Jaam: Blue Series EP Vol. 2 (Mutant Soul)
This is building into a nice little label. With Mr. Alex Attias on remix
duties for the A side, this is already a firm favourite. Also contains two
excellent interpretations from Rollercone.
15. Koop: Summer Sun (JCR)
Taken me a while to get my hands on this, but worth the wait. The original
is truly fantastic but the Richard Dorfmeister mix gives it serious
dancefloor action for an
awesome EP.
16. Gotan Project Meets Chet Baker: Round About Midnight (Mo Smog)
A truly beautiful reinterpretation from the Gotan Project. Still retaining
the framework of the original jazz track but giving it those lovely sounds
that has made the Gotan crew a major force.
17. Nitin Sawhney: Cold & Intimate / Moonrise - Remixes (V2)
Lovely broken beat / 2step crossover from Landslide on 'Cold & Intimate'
while Joe Claussell goes all Buena Vista Social Club for his epic remix on
the flip. Claussell is starting to flex his musical muscles with a departure
from his usual house grooves.
18. Gak Sato: Tanagram - Remixes (Temposphere)
The Italian scene is the one to look out for in 2002, with loads of artists
and labels leading the way. This is sublime with remixes from Ninja Tunes'
Flanger and a highly musical mix from Japan's Yukihiro Fukutomi.
19. Archie Shepp: Song For Mozambique - Remixes (Mo Smog)
More Italian buisness with a slightly progressive mix that still retains the
jazziness of the original. You can never mistake THAT bassline.
20. Mono Deluxe: Go EP & Unreleased Material (CDr)
Thanks for this lovely collection of chilled grooves. The 'Go' EP should
appear soon and the other tracks demand a proper release.
21. Beatless: Like Sugar Like Rain / The Truth (Ubiquity)
King Britt gives us his usual dreamy style genius to the incredible Beatless
project. With Alex Attias also providing his own re-interpretations, this is
a classy package.
22. Square City: Jam Mumbo / Guided By Robots (Pagoda)
Superior Detroit style electronica from this talented UK artist.
23. Larry Heard: Another Night (Track Mode)
One sided 12 from one of house music's true legends. Never one to fall
behind the times, this is cutting edge stuff.
24. Various: Black Rio (Strut CDr)
An incredible compilation from the fab Strut label. This gives yet another
side to Brazilian music that will surprise as much as it delights.
25. Aardvark: Find The Cow (Delsin)
Following on from the recent Attica Blues mix, the full length debut
appears. With releases like this, Delsin will be one of THE labels of 2002.
26. Danny Krivit: Grass Roots (Strut)
Finally on vinyl, with 16 tracks of super rare gems, that will never be seen
on any other compilations, this is a collection from heaven.
27. Mondo Grosso: Star Suite - Blaze Mix (King Street)
One of the most talked about tracks in recent times has finally found its
way into my box. Over 15 minutes long and with a wicked dub mix on the flip,
this is the sound of real house music. Stunning.
28. Artless: 2nd Room (Schema)
Schema are currently on a roll and this is yet another classic. Starting off
with a garage bassline and 2 step beats, this builds up into 4/4 action.
29. Various: Arctic Circles 3 DJ Sampler (Beatservice)
Mysterious 6 track 12" out of Norway with some glorious moments. Royksopp's
offering is built around an amazing Scott Walker sample while Flunk go all
trip hop.
30. Loqate: Miracles - Recloose Mix (Ubiquity)
Always an exciting prospect when Recloose has a new release and this is no
different. Outstanding future thinking dancefloor material that leaves the
competition standing. With 2 Afronaught mixes on the flip, this is a gem.
