This weekend, Mexican LKabel SUAVE celebrated the release of their first
compillation 'Soft + Suave' with all the usual downtempo suspect: K+D,
Zero 7, Llorca, St. Germain, Gotan Project, et. al. The CD release party
was held at the National Modern Art Museum's garden, an awesome site for
an outdoors deep house party. Free drinks on a chilly summer night.
Besides a DJ team whom I could not recognize, Mexico's Silverio and UK's
Aqua Bassino performed live. In case you had not heard about him,
'Silverio' is a mexican performance artist's pseudonym who plays kitschy
breakbeats dressed in a white suit and a mullet hairpiece. He was booed
off the stage. Aqua Bassino came next making an awesome first impression.
People gratefully greeted the live percussion, sax and piano combo.
However, pretty soon the mellow jazzy riffs over deep house beats became
too repetitive to keep the crowd interesting. A little more than half hour
into the set the audience had been reduced into about half. Very few
stayed until the end. I even saw some of the organizers leave before the
end of their set. Still, a nice evening of what I hope many future similar
events in the city. If so, I will keep you posted.
