Hi there. Its Matthew K from Interactive in Glasgow, Scotland here. Been
incredibly busy (as usual) at Firebird in Glasgow's West End with my usual
Tuesday night residency. Forthcoming dates include the Pyrotechics nights at
Club Alaska and the Bacardi Tent at the T in the Park Festival in
association with the Sub Club this weekend Sun 14th July between 12 - 3pm.
Still lots of amazing new releases flooding out on a weekly basis but it
does slow down over the summer and it gives us time to look back on some of
the overlooked gems from the last few months. Despite my charts reflecting
my favourite up to the minute releases, my average DJ set always contains a
significant amount of either lost gems and classics from era's gone past and
relases from the last few months. Now that we are half way through the year,
it becomes obvious the tracks that don't go away and become reliable
favourites. Albums from Koop, Plej, Nu Spirit Helsinki, Jazzanova and 'Music
& Movement' have never been out of my DJ sets since their release as have
singles from Quant, Calm, Horsepower and Rednose Distrikt. Likewise old gems
like 'Lanquidity' by Sun Ra, 'Gris Gris' by Dr John and Funkadelic's classic
debut have slipped into my record box on numerous occassions of late.
For you web addicts out there check the rather fab
http://www.twoplayer.co.uk website which highlights the best in deep techno
and electronica. Containing reviews and charts from, among others Emoticon's
Tom Churchill, its highlighting some of the most important music out today.
Well worthy of your attention.
Anyway, until next week.......
Matthew K DJ Chart 7th July 2002
1. Various: Companionship - Sound Of Scandanavia (April Records)
Thanks to Nik Weston for this beauty. Eleven tracks hailing from the most
exciting musical area around right now. Features the likes of Koop, Jol, Raw
Fusion and Butti 49, every track shows real musicianship and soul leading
the way. All I need is to track it down on vinyl.
2. Jimpster: Domestic Science (Kudos)
How many classic albums can there be this year? Mr. O'Dell delivers his
follow up to 'Messages From The Hub' (not counting the Audiomontage long
player) and its a wonder!!! If you loved 'Funkifier' then this will be
heaven for you.....Also check out the recent releases on Jamie's Freerange
label which is on a roll at the moment.
3. Telepopmusik meets Banzai Republic: Breathe - X hale remix (CDr)
Thanks to Jesper in Denmark for this amazing remix of Telepopmuzik. Not sure
if this will ever get an official release but it so deserves to, reworking
the original into more chilled terittories but still retaining the
dancefloor feel. SUPERB.
4. Nu Spirit Helsinki: S/T (Guidance)
Was sent the CDr of this about 6 months ago and it blew me away then. Now
finally available on triple vinyl, it is one of the years finest albums. No
need for any further discussion - buy it today.
5. Koop: In A Heartbeat - Gerd Remix (CDr)
What a remix! The fab Terry Callier track from the Koop album was always
going to get the remix treatment and this result is awesome adding an even
jazzier feel to it. Unfortunately not due out for a while yet.
6. Roots Manuva: Dub Come Save Me (CDr)
For those lucky enough to have picked up the super rare 'Witness Dub' 7"
will know what a gem this album is. Roots Manuva is perfectly suited to dub
re-interpretations and this is sublime.
7. Thirdface: Read U My Soul (Full Cycle)
Astounding release from Full Cycle that shows them moving completely away
from drum'n'bass. The A side is a slice of dark voodoo inspired jazz with
heaps of soul, while 'Got To Move' is a moodier, deeper affair being a
delightful jazz ballad. AWESOME.
8. Pepita Project: Pepita Theme (Personal Records)
Thanks to Herr Preddy for this killer new release on his, always reliable,
Personal label. Quality deep house grooves with an amazing remix from
Spectrum Works' Marcus Worgull in a jazz piano meets old school Chicago
house kind of vibe.
9. As One vs Ian O'Brien: Contours (Ubiquity)
Its always going to be special when Kirk DeGiorgio and Ian O'Brien hook up
and this is no exception. Detroit techno for 2002 is at its most cutting
edge here. Proper dancefloor grooves.
10. Nicole Conte: Jet Sounds Revisited Volume 1 (Schema)
Fine remixes from Les Gammas, Micatone, Freeform Arkestra, Espen Home and
Dining Rooms spread over 2 x 10" singles. Yet another classic release from
Italy's Schema label.
11. Andre Theis: Komm.test Vol.2 (One Nine One)
Herr Preddy is also responsible for this label where Andre drops his second
volume of instrumental hip hop cuts showing him developing his sound into
more DJ Shadow type territories.
12. Various: As We Travel (Harmless)
The predecesor 'Make Music' is the finest release on Harmless' mighty label
but this follow up is just as worthy with my current favourites including
Lyn Christopher and Sinto. This is psychadelic soul at its finest.
13. Bamboo Soul: Didi (Switch)
The Riton re-reb is my favourite where a glitchy, cut up Herbert style
production meets a warped 2 step sound for a highly original sound.
14. Various: One Step Ahead 2 (Straight Ahead)
Volume 1 was a classic and this follow up is just as good. 3 slices of
vinyl, gorgeous packaging and an amazing selection including 10 exclusives.
With the likes of Tweak, Freeform Arkestra and Wak Chu Ku on hand, the
result is an all round winner.
15. Various: Groove Sanctuary (Fuengo)
Compiled by Raw Deal (where is his album?) and on 2 slices of vinyl
including some rare Japanese gems as well as Raw Deal remixes, its a tasty
package.
16. Amplified Orchestra / D & B: Silver Lining EP (4 Lux)
Brand new label associated with Gerd with an exceptional debut release. The
man himself remixes two of the tracks here with 'The Prophecy' being a
delightful dreamy breakbeat house number. Classy package.
17. Mind Over Midi with Tikiman: Champion / Reveation (Beat Service)
Always been big fans of Tikiman here at Interactive and its good to see him
collaborating with other producers. This is what you would expect - the
finest in deep dubby minimal grooves with the heavenly vocals of Tikiman.
18. Loose Ensemble: Sonic Swamp / Apollo Soul (Foundation Music)
The kind of dancefloor record I love. Kind of broken beat but with a
smoother groove with glorious jazz infused instrumentation and an influence
of Detroit makes for a sure fire winner.
19. Various: Day By Day (Delsin)
CD only compilation from one of the finest labels in the world today.
Including all the highlights from the last year or so, when you hear them
all together you realise the amazing quality of their label. For anyone who
doesn't have any Delsin releases - buy this.
20. Various: Compilation 2 (Music For Speakers)
Another CD only compilation that shows an unsurpasable label at its prime.
Out there on their own, artists like David Caron, Aardvark and Sonar Lodge
all drop killers an this album.
21. Various: Breakable EP (Nanny Tango)
You may remember me hyping a Jung Collective 7" on this label a month or two
back. Well, the Jung Collective appear here again although its the Hermetica
track I am feeling right now
22. Doctor L: Let Me Out EP (Comet)
Got a tasty little package from the Comet crew the other day (thanks guys)
and it included this gem. I'm going for 'Baby Its All Right' with its
gorgeous flute drifting over the offbeats. LUSH.
23. Da Lata: Golden (Palm Pictures)
Promo only 12 from forthcoming remix album, it features 2 killer mixes. Bugz
in The Attic continue to blow us away with their offbeat re-interpretation
while Patlife builds up the beats while never needing to go into a full on
drum'n'bass track. The album should be a winner.
24. Peace Orchestra: Reset (K7)
Triple vinyl package of remixes from the utterly amazing Kruder album of
last year. All the big names are here - Gotan Project, Beanfield, Truby
Trio, etc. with jazz fusion coming to the fore. However its the downtempo
remixes by Zero DB and Chateau Flight that are getting the most plays from
me.
25. Flunk: For Sleepyheads Only (Beat Service)
Thanks to those lovely people from Beat Service who sent me a fantastic
batch of goodies during the week. Expect to see more of their catalogue
appear in my charts over the next couple of weeks but this is already a
favourite. Superb album going from Bjork style chill out tracks to dubbier
grooves.
26. Su-Paka-Pooh: Theme De Yo-Yo - Remix (Disorient)
Restless Soul work their remix magic on one this years finest records with
help from Kaidi Tatham and Nathan Haines. With this line up helping out, it
was always going to be a winner.
27. Rednose Distrikt: Hoor's EP (Hum Hum)
The follow up to potentially the best track of the year is here and it
doesn't dissapoint. More mid to down tempo groovers with a distinctly funk
influence, expect this to be a grower.
28. Amma: On My Own - Landslide & Spectre Remixes (Inspirit Recordings)
One of the finest purveyers of lush 2 step. Both mixes here are a delight
with the Spectre one narrowly coming out on top. Watch out for Inspirit
Recordings, they are on the cutting edge right now.
29. Tom & Joyce: Tom & Joyce (Yellow / Climate)
The Brazillian sound is just growing stronger and stronger just now and this
is further proof of its high quality. Their debut album after all the
compilation appearances and remixes, this is the sound of the summer
dancefloors.
30. Chari Chari: Across The Universe - Frankie Valentine Remix (Ultima)
Check this out. One of Japan's finest get the remix from Frankie Valentine
on a new 12" out of Portugal. Spiritual dancefloor grooves with percussion
that not even Clausell could match. Very special indeed. Check the album as
well.
31. US 3: Get Out - Marky & XRS Remix (Universal Jazz)
After the killer Truby Trio remix from earlier this year (which I am still
playing), DJ Marky & XRS drop another fine example of amazing drum'n'bass. 2
mixes on offer, this works the dancefloor well.
32. Tim 'Love' Lee: Its All Good (Keep Digging)
I somewhat unjustly overlooked the previous Red Snapper release on this
label and I'm not going to make that mistake twice. Only a mix CDr just now
but this compilation of favourites of Tim 'Love' Lee has countless gems and
will make for a killer vinyl package.
33. Sonar Lodge: Interior Backgrounds (Music For Speakers)
What a label this is. Wacked out jazz for the modern age. If Miles was
around today he would be hooking up with these guys.
34. Benny III, Kode 9 & Culprit: Fat Larry's Skank (Tempa)
The Tempa label blow us away with an amazing Indian style 2 step monster
with an eerie flute drifting over the top of this dancefloor killer. Watch
out for Kode 9 - a name for the future and be sure to check out the
forthcoming Tempa compilation - the perfect starting place for all those yet
to hear their delights.
35. Les Gammas: Outra Vida - Remixes (Compost)
Featuring the vocal talents of Smoke City's Nina Miranda, its another
Brazilian style gem. I'm going for the DJ Patlife remix where the drum 'n'
bass producer scores his best ever remix.
36. The Electones: Summercloud (Inertia)
Other than the Hefner remix album, things have been very quiet at Inertia
for a long time. They're back though with a new outfit and a truly superb 3
track 12" with all the usual Inertia style jazziness.
37. Gotan Project: Triptico - Remix (Ya Basta!)
Now on vinyl, Peter Kruder does a superb job of transforming the Gotan
Project classic into a dancefloor winner while retaining all the elements of
the original.
38. Rhythmix: Reluque Batuque (Far Out)
Remix album time and with the likes of 4 Hero, Masters At work, Da Lata,
Zero DB and Bing Bang on offer, it makes for a quality package.
39. System 7 / Derrick May: Mysterious Traveller (A-Wave)
A blast from the past and an amazing surprise. This is the album Derrick May
has been promising for nearly 15 years now. OK, its under the System 7 name
but thankfully only a couple of tracks have the Hillage new age sound, the
rest is pure Detroit techno of the highest quality.
40. Moonstar: Dupont Remixes (Compost)
Straight to the Nu Era remix of 'Workin Men's Hustle' where Marc Mack of 4
Hero drops a wonderous Detroit influences broken beat killer. A truly
amazing track from an all round excellent EP.
41. A Bossa Electrica: Tombo in 7/4 (Raw Fusion)
Yet more Swedish wonders from this exceptional new label thats getting big
props from Cukipapa. Latin style but with a very modern twist, the title
track on this 3 track EP is the old classic that instantly brings a smile to
your face. WICKED.
42. Nude: Digitise (Shelflife)
Another release from the Ammunition crew (also home to the likes of Tempa),
this dubby 2 step release looks to the Detroit originators for an inspiring
release. With Zed Bias now on Sirkus and his collaborations with Kaidi
Tathan for Laws Of Motion, watch the 2 step and broken beat scenes hit off
each other for some stunning music.
43. Lava: Vem Para Ficar (Audiopharm)
Well done for Audiopharm for picking up this Japanese delight. Straight to
the Moodorama remix for a stripped back, lush groover. LOVE THIS.
44. Stereotyp: My Sound (G Stone)
Cheers to Cukipapa for sending me this. After the delights of his 12's,
Stereotyp drops 11 tracks of major dubby buisness. Loads of vocals,
drum'n'bass influences, 2 step sounds and a stunning production job results
in a killer album.
45. Sun Ra: Satellites Are Spinning - Zero DB & Hectic Mix (Mo Smog)
Only on CDr just now but this is blinding. The Zero DB boys do it again,
this time in collaboration with Hectic aka Gilles Peterson on his first
production job. The boy did well.
