NEWS
I'm literally inundated with great new music from all over. It will be
impossible for me to play them all this week, and more is on the way
here. I've always said that 2002 was going to be another great musical
year, and I'm not disappointed. Hope you aren't either by way of the
music you've been hearing here and elsewhere this past year, as you are
all the potential beneficiaries of said music. There's more to come,
more to play, and more period...so hang in there for the ride ahead!
I've been musing you about upcoming interviews for awhile now. So
without further ado, here are the tentative airdates:
-Friday July 12--Martin Iveson aka Atjazz (Mantis Recordings)
-Friday July 19--Chateau Flight (Versatile Records)
-Friday July 26--Subthunk (L.A. based acid-jazz band; will do first live
SLO gig at the Frog & Peach pub on July 30)
-Friday August 2--Chris Vogado of Zero dB (Fluid Ounce)
It's gonna take awhile for the revamped Urban Landscapes web site to
appear. I'm rather inundated at the moment, and I'm creating the all
myself! I know how I'd like the site to work and know what to do (for
the most part), but it's a rather time-consuming affair. Sooooo...expect
the new site to appear online by the beginning of September 2002. In the
meantime, you should be served well by the current one.
REVIEWS
Dabyre--Instrmntl (Eastern Development)
Yes, he of the "One/Three" album on Detroit's Ghostly International
label from last year (one of my 30 Most Recommended of 2001) has yet
another album out, this time on Scott Herron's (aka Prefuse 73) Eastern
Development label out of Atlanta. More hip-hop sensibilities on this one
from one Tadd Mullinix, though a bit less experimental than "One/Three."
Worth checking out for hip-hop fans seeking different layers/texture in
the music.
Various Artists--The Complete Death Of Cool (Noodles/Leaf)
This is the most sampadelic collection I've heard in quite awhile. A
full 38 tracks of weirdness that I enjoyed listening to thoroughly. This
collection, originally released as two separate works under "The Death
Of Cool" titles, are now together as one collection. Put together by
Zygmnut Janowski of Noodles and released through Leaf, it's a rather
quirky experience that may require an acquired taste. Still, it's worth
checking out if you are into experimental sampadelica.
Brooks--You, Me & Us (Mantis)
21 year-old Andy Brooks drops this, his first full-length for Mantis
Recordings. Under the production wing of Mr. Iveson, "You, Me & Us" is
very much a crossbreed between Atjazz and Matthew Herbert. In fact, a
couple of the vocal tunes feature the vocals of Dani Siciliano, who did
most of the vocals for the excellent "Body Function" long-player from
Herbert that was released last year (another of my 30 Most Recommended
Albums from last year). Brooks is very adept at his craft, and uses the
combination of his musical gifts and the skills he's picked up while
hanging out at Mantis. Not sure yet if it will see a domestic release,
but it's worth seeking all the same. As if this album wasn't good
enough, Atjazz and Brooks will combine forces for a new Mantis music
project later this year. Thanks to Martin for clueing me in.
Various Artists--Co-Operation Sessions 2
The Man from Bootsville slips this CD with my CARE package from Vienna.
I haven't the chance to listen to the first volume, but this new
collection is very fresh! This is inspired by the monthly UK event known
as Co-Op Night. A who's who of West London operatives are here....Neon
Phusion, Da One Away (Dego & IG), Big Bang, Numbers (Demus from 2
Banks), Opaque (aka Seiji), Daz-I-Kue, and others contribute exclusive
tracks to this compilation. It's available both on one CD or on vinyl
(though the latter leaves off a few tunes). Essential for all West
London fans and broken beat lovers!
Stereotyp--My Sound (G-Stone)
Yeah, yeah! Stefan Moerth is the man known as Stereotyp (stereo-tip),
and he's on the case with this excellent album from K&D's G-Stone. The
full-length treads on the fine line between dub and broken beat styles,
and the interesting contrasts in sounds alone are worth the listen. If
you've enjoyed his remixes (including those for Fauna Flash and
Microfish), then you'll dig this adventurous work. If you're a
dub/reggae fan, you should challenge yourself to investigate "My Sound."
But really, all forward-thinking music lovers should indulge in this
territory at least once. Thanks again to Dr. Boots for sending me this
treasure.
King Britt Presents Scuba--Hidden Treasures (Om)
When I think of "deep house," Scuba is surely the man the sticks out in
my mind. For this, his first Scuba album for San Francisco-based Om
Records (part of a three-record deal), Philly artist/DJ/producer King
Britt has taken his favorite Scuba remixes that he's done over the years
and puts them together in a rather nice volume. The results makes for
very enjoyable listening from beginning to end. Many will be glad that
his brilliant remix of Soul Dharma's "Flower" appears here (this one I
get calls on every time I've played it), but there are many that I'm
listening to for the first time. Even those Scuba fanatics will find
some new gems, such as "If I Lost You," a broken/house gem that King
Britt played during the 2001 Winter Music Conference that never saw the
light of day until now. The remix of I:Cube's "Adore" goes for a much
different sound than the original (which I've enjoyed), adding Alma
Horton's soulful voice to the mix. But you really, really, REALLY should
do yourself a favor and pick this up when it comes out on Tuesday, July
9th. It will leave you feeling all the better that King Britt has been
put on this earth. I'm very much looking forward to his long-player of
originals, which is tentatively slated for release in Fall 2002. Philly
deserves respect, and King Britt deserves that much more.
CORRECTION
The forthcoming full-length on Versatile from Focus aka Phil Asher is
called "Sweet & Sour," not "Sugar Or Spice" as I've wrote last week in
my review. The second 12" single from that album that was reviewed last
week, "Having Your Fun," is out now on the label.
SHOUTS
Big stupid shouts out to Alan Brown aka Cukipapa for sharing a bit of
Scandinavia, musically-speaking...I won't forget this, ever! Thanks goes
out to Martin Iveson aka Atjazz for the interview yesterday--you're a
cool guy to know, and it's time that others know more about you. Thanks
also to Nick at Mantis for his efforts to hook me up! Shouts to Dirk at
Radiodisturbance--glad to get the mail knowing that you're feeling what
I'm feeling, and that Scuba CD ain't bad, either! Shouts to Ennio--will
do my best to catch your online show sometime in my life! Taps to Noah
at !K7--make sure you don't wear out the T-shirt too soon! And thanks to
Bob at Triage for suggesting and delivering "The Complete Death of Cool"
compilation.
