STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions

    Hello all

Just to prove that this thing is happening all over Australia, we had a
visit from Ravi, one of the pioneers of the club jazz scene in Brisbane. He
spent some time in London in the early 90s and was blown away by Gilles
Peterson and Patrick Forge's sessions at Dingwalls, so he started his own
session called Sunny Side Up (with Will) when he returned. Sunny Side Up is
back in Brisbane now as a quarterly event (not to be confused with
Melbourne's Sunny Side Up which plays trance or progressive house or
something like that!). I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in
both the old and the new Sunny Side Up sessions and can say that they are
definitely full of all the smiling faces that Ravi mentioned on Stylin.

For Trainspotters Corner I had Wikkamanıs "Jungle Pussy" which houses up
Manfredo Festıs samba-disco-jazz classic "Jungle Kitten" (Tabu, 1979),
itself the offspring of Festıs earlier and rarer "Jungle Cat" (T&M, 1976)
(which I left at home). I also finally succumbed to playing Infekto's "Left
Hand Jazz" which I had been holding off on for a while as I tried to hunt
down the piano sample. My first instinct was Pharoah Sanders' "Got to Have
Freedom", as it was for 2 listeners. But a closer listen to the studio
version showed that this wasn't the one. "Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt" also
came close, but not quite. Anyone at home worked this out? Maybe the live
version of "Got to Have Freedom"??

This week it's more of me, and I have managed to uncover some very
underground new hip hop releases which should appeal to fans of the abstract
soul of the Dwele/Jay Dee sound.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
