Subject: Re: [acid-jazz] In My CD Player
. . . this morning:
1. Soft + Suave Relax Session (Suave Records)
The first domestic downbeat compilation, as far as I know. Just
released by the people from Suave Records (the same guys who used to be
Tombola Records, that is, the people behind Titan and Plastilina Mosh).
hence, it includes all the expected artists (K+D, St Germain, Llorca, Zero
7, et. al.) and nothing really new or hard to find elsewhere. Still, a
nice collection.
2. Best of Both Worlds (Kitty-Yo)
Nice sampler from this German label. Compiled exclusively last
year for the Spaniard magazine 'Rockdeluxe'. A little too 'progressive' at
times, it is a very good introduction to bands like LAUB, Raz O'Hara, et.
al. . . . By the way, any of you has heard Laub's new 'Informationshare'?
The first single is beautiful, but I'd like to know how is the rest.
3. Los Amigos Invisibles : Arepa 3000
This was one of the first records I got when I returned to Mexico,
and none has been able to determine yet why I like it. In other words,
everyone who was heard it around here hates it, but I think it is pretty
cool. Kitschy Acid-Jazz meets Merengue peppered with everything from Drum
and Bass to old school Electro. Not as good as their second album 'The
Sound of...', but much funnier.
4. Gus Gus : Believe EP (4AD)
Why put the whole album on the CD changer if this EP contains
every song I like from it?
5. Balboa : Plastic Judas on Fire (Mil Records)
From the label behind the whole Nortec thing, the debut album from
Titan's former bass player Andrez Sanchez Maher, mixed by his former
bandmate Alvaro Ruiz (aka Ruizort) and mastered by Pepe Mogt (Fussible). I
was really disappointed when I first heard it because I had missed
Balboa's music development for a couple of years. In those years, Balboa
developed a taste for Clicks and Cuts which is not my favorite kind of
electronic music. Still, this album has really grown on me and you can
still hear some of his acid breakbeats roots guiding some of his music
explorations.
