Know your labels really well. It wasn't all that long ago that most any
small label was probably a true independent (ie- they took no money from,
and used no resource of, a major label to promote their products).
Nowadays (I love that word) its almost impossible to find records in the
stores that are on truely independent labels. Virtually every "indie" that
you see is either a subsidiary of a major ( like V2, Astralwerks, and the
now defunct Caroline) or they use major label distributors to get their
stuff out there. Back in the mid nineties, when we had the original "big
five" corperations, they accounted for far fewer of the labels that were
selling records than they do today. But, they still owned almost every
substantial distributing house that existed. Its hard to work around the
beast when he eats up the road that you're walking on.
And let us not forget what the RIAA really is. They have nothing to do
with artist's rights, or any of that b*llshit. They are lobbying and legal
muscle for the LABELS. They represent the industry, not the artists. If
Vivendi/Universal were to go after Joe Blow the file sharing software
creating college kid from Utah (or something), they would be demonized. Even
if a few of the majors got together and tried to stop him, they would
ultimately look bad. But if you have a uniquely separate body of "officials"
that represent you (like a hit man for the mob boss), your hands stay clean
    while the job gets done.
Come to think of it, I need something like this...
