Bugge Wesseltoft was in town for his only U.S. appearance here in San
Francisco as part of the SF Jazz Festival and came by the station for
an interview a few days later. He's one of the nicest people you'd
ever care to meet and discussed his music, his label (Jazzland
Records) and the state of the jazz world in Scandinavia. If you can't
catch it live, check the archives next week.

We ran our "Best of 2002" for the first half of the year and to no
one's surprise, there was time for only a fraction of the entire list
(see below). We'll work the rest into the next few programs, along
with a slew of new albums (Stereotyp, John Beltran, Seelenluft,
Assembly) and 12"s (Quantic, Kava, Ayro, Partial Arts, Jimpster).

Most of you are aware of the CARP ruling that came down last week
specifying how much Internet broadcasters would owe in copyright fees
to the RIAA. It doesn't bode well for small companies without deep
pockets or corporate sponsorship. We already have two local
    casualties: SomaFM (http://www.somafm.com) and Flaresound
(http://www.flaresound.com), the folks who were kind enough to
rebroadcast FreeFall on Thursday mornings. Here's a quote from Jeff
    at Flaresound:

    no more music....
RIAA has forced us to shut down our US operations.

    1. RIAA has successfully argued that Internet Radio is "distribution
of a perfect digital copy" of copyrighted material saved to the
    listeners computer.
    2. That Internet Radio is responsible to pay copyright fees of .07
cents USD for every listener per song that they hear. This will cost
Flaresound over $10000 USD a year
    3. RIAA is stating that "small broadcasters" will easily pay $500 USD
a year. This applies to stations with less than 5 listeners at any
    given time.

We have to decided to stop the Jazzybeats and Bedroombeats broadcasts
because we are now liable for these excessive fees under the DMCA.
Unfortunately the only thing that Flaresound is guilty of is exposing
you to musical acts and asking you to buy CDs with our Amazon
associate purchase system. Without our and other similar broadcasts
exposure it is highly likely that many of the record labels and
musical acts that you have purchased from will also be adversely
    impacted.

There are members of Congress who plan on challenging the decision,
but there may be many more casualties along the way. To learn more,
visit the sites listed above, or check out the following:

    http://www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,53377,00.html
    http://www.somafm.com/carp

In the meantime, it couldn't hurt to get in touch with your local
government officials and ask them to repeal this blow to the
    independent spirit.

That's all for this week - ciao for now!
    David
