Last saturday, I went down to this uptown club in
Victoria Island called 11:45. A friend's friend's
friend was having a birthday party. Shit was rocking
in the VIP room from the ceiling to the floor. This
local drummer-led band was dropping hot steamy party
tunes everything from Jill Scott to Fela, to Lagbaja
to Fuji to Femi tight 6 piece outfit called Anesee or
something like that. Then somebody introduced this
NY-based DJ we talked about Phil Asher and Gilles. As
we spoke I discovered he was Jerome Syndenham.... He
played a long set using a friend's records. Alright
soul set Roy Ayers, boogie soul ... Nice but not block
rocking (esp. after the band...). His partners in
Ibadan records are all Nigerians. Next month Erykah
Badu plays here. Lagos was kinda special last
saturday, nice sights...
