ï Broken Beats of the Underground: Days of Future Past is an article
focusing on the (primarily) West London broken beat 'scene,' with a
focus on Dego of 4hero, Alex Attias, IG Culture, the Bugz in the Attic
crew, Toronto's own Moonstarr and others. It came out near the tail end
of 2001, but I'm still getting feedback and enotes galore. Check it if

CLUB STUFF:
Wednesday March 27
glide
features
DJ Meta4 (Vancouver, Mo' Funk, Nu Tone)
blending broken beat + global grooves
alongside glide resident DJ's
Denise Benson + Andrew Allsgood
at Gypsy Co-op, 817 Queen St. W. ï Toronto
no cover ï 19+ event
416.703.5069 or mentalchatter@sympatico.ca
Following the release of the well received Geosonic Grooves Vol. 1
Nutone compilation, selected and sequenced by Vancouver's DJ Meta4, the
Meta one also known as Ian Menzies returns to Toronto and to glide at
Gypsy Co-op. His November 2001 glide debut found the dancefloor busy
with music lovers who appreciated his tightly mixed, adventurous set of
broken beats, future jazz, and well varied global grooves. Meta4's
return should prompt more of the same happy mayhem.
The man has no shortage of future projects: producing hip hop artists
like Kia Kadiri and Moka Only; making new Meta4 tracks; remixing Hassan
Hakmoun; and compiling a second Geosonic Grooves release which will
feature the likes of Bill Laswell, Roni Size, Fauna Flash, dZihan &
Kamien, Natacha Atlas, and Nitin Sawhney. Catch him in an intimate venue
while you can!
ï BTW, for those who can't get enough, Meta4 is also appearing the next
night, Thursday March 28, at Global Groove Thursdays (Fez Batik, 129
Peter St.) where DJ's and live musicians come together for "a fusion
that's as ancient as tomorrow." Meta4 plays alongside CIUT's DJ
Medicineman and musicians Deb Sinha (darbuka), Suba Sankaran (voice),
and Ernie Tollar (ney, bansuri). $5 at the door.

ï John E + Nathan Barato

Kerri Chandler always makes me smile. Every time I hear him play, his
incredible fluidity, versatility, and deep, sweet basslines make my
week. House heads know him for his garage heavy Madhouse label and many
productions for King Street, Large, Nervous and others. Here, Chandler
is showcased in the main room with me having the honours of opening.
Bring on the bass 'n grooves! All four rooms at Roxy will be open, with
the Groove.ca room featuring Frank Williams and Kelly Lewis; Shifting
Gears room with DeeJay Nav and Jason Palma; and Phat room with John E
and Nathan Barato. Kicking off this holiday weekend in fine style.
