    hey there everyone,

Much, much, much goin' on at glide these days! Before I talk present 'n
future, a word of thanks to all those who joined us last Wednesday while
Brighton's Bonobo (Tru Thoughts, Ninja Tune) was on the decks, and the
week previous when Moonstarr and Dialect (PTR, Compost) performed a live
set before heading off to tour Europe. Nice to feel the support and
enjoyment. Thanks for making it fun!

Tomorrow, Wed May 1, we have very special guest Aran McMahon in from
Galway, Ireland. It's been a treat to meet the soulful music-loving Aran
as he travels and tours parts of North America, and this little guest
spot at glide is his only T.O. gig. Freshly hooked up, with word leaking
    to you here 'n now.

Much thanks to Carlos Mondesir over at Hot Stepper for putting Aran and
I in touch! Read on for gig details and some info on Aran himself, but
trust me, if you're out 'n about tomorrow eve, you don't want to miss
this free event...especially if soul, funk, jazz nu and old, hip-hop,
and related dancefloor sounds are also a passion for you.

Then there are the three talented locals joining us in May: Rollin'
Cash, Teknostep and Sudden respectively. Lots of live bizness also. I
could go on 'cause I'm enthusiastic like that :-) Here come the
specifics. Hope to have you join us. xo

    tomorrow!!

    ï MAY 1:
ARAN McMAHON (Shake, Jazz Juice ï Ireland)
    no cover ï Aran spins 11pm - 12:30 am

In Ireland, thereís only one guy with the right selection, Aran Mc
Mahon. Heís the man.' - Gilles Peterson

ëMy favorite Irish DJ.í - Norman Jay

"When Aran picks and chooses the sounds of the universe, people get
    ready.
Thanks to that monster record collection and a winning ear for the
    groove,
Aranís sets are as good as gets in Irish clubland. With an unfailing
    ability
to get any joint jumping and pumping, it really doesnít get any better
    than
this." - Jim Carroll, Irish Times

Aran McMahon is the DJ who makes jumping around in a club to the sounds
    of
the universe the nearest thing to heaven on earth. Since this Irish DJ
kicked off with Feet First all those years ago (there are even people
    who
still swear by the mix-tapes he made as a kid), every corner of the land
    has
experienced his take on the funk. From his roots in the wild, wild west
    of
Galway to wowing the masses at the Witness Festival (Irelandís Big Day
Out), Aranís awe-inspiring sets are a thing of wonder.

What it comes down to are the tunes. Thanks to a huge record collection
    and
an instinctive ear for the groove, Aranís sets are as varied as
    possible,
taking in funky house and hip-hop beats as well as funk, latin and rare
grooves. Whatever itís called, itís played - as long as its got soul.

There was plenty of that at Jazz Juice, the legendary Sunday night
    session
at the GPO club in Galway. For six years, Aran made Jazz Juice a home
    from
home in Ireland for quality tunes, some so fresh they were only
ripening, some forgotten classics Aran had coaxed back onto his
turntables. A mash-up of good music from all over the world, there were
no rules. Ask guests like Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Andy Smith,
Harvey, Ashley Beedle, Donal Dineen, Aim and Ben Wilcox about
Jazz Juice and theyíll remember it with a big smile. See the One More
    Choon
documentary film for what Galwayís young people and Irelandís
    tastemakers
    thought about it.

After Jazz Juice ended in 2001, Aran simply kept on keeping on. A new
    Friday
night called Shake (Bar Cuba, Galway) is continuing the soul, funk,
    disco
and hip hop boogaloo out west. There have also been slots at Ri-Ra in
Dublin, Soul Clinic appointments in Dublin and Limerick, legendary Black
    Box
sessions in Galway, the odd trip to the peopleís republic of Cork,
    support
slots with the likes of Morcheeba and St Germain and, of course, the
    honour
of sharing the same bill as Master At Work Little Louie Vega at the
    Witness
    festival.

If that sounds hectic to you, Aran is also on the radio (the soulful
    Feeliní
Good show on Galway Bay FM every Friday), preparing a mix-CD for release
and planning worldwide DJ-ing adventures in the United States and
    Australia.

Aran somehow also manages to write for several magazines, complete a
masters in computers (on top of his law degree) and be a proud
    slipmat-wielding dad to Rory.

    Aran's Top Ten
    1) De la Soul: Held down (Tommy Boy)
    2) Koop: Waltz for Koop (JCR)
    3) Herbert: The audience (K7)
    4) Iz & diz: Mouth (Pepe Bradock remix) (Classic)
    5) Dilated Peoples: Worst comes to Worst (Capitol)
    6) Sunga tíexperience: Itís you (Nicola conte remix) (Avex)

    8) Zero 7: Truth and Rights (UD)
