STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
Did my voice sound nasal or did it sound rich and textured last week?
Whichever way, it was because of my cold which also kept me grumpily in bed
while the rest of you were out grooving to Nicole Willis. All reports were
good about the show (which featured Jimi Tenor on keys and two horn players)
and from the interview it sounds like she's up to some interesting things
for her next album, with an assortment of producers this time around.
Nuspirit Helsinki will be doing one track, which should be a good'un if the
collaboration on their own album (just out) is anything to go by. If you
haven't heard Nicole's last album, "Soul Makeover", then check out the
electro-Motown of "Gonna Get Yours". I'd love to hear a Northern Soul DJ
drop that tune!
Last week's Trainspotters' Corner was definitely one in the "and now for
something different" category. I must openly confess to being a Philip Glass
fan, and it was seeing the 1983 film Koyaanisqatsi that converted me. One of
the pieces on the soundtrack is "The Grid", which builds layers of cyclical
motifs of increasing pace and intensity, perfect to accompany sped-up
footage of people on escalators and cars at night. When I recently picked up
"It's da Biz" by mid-school hip hop legend Biz Markie, I was immediately
struck by the backing vocals which were sung in chords very similar to those
towards the end of "The Grid". Actually, "It's da Biz" is an older track
(mid-90s?) produced by Large Professor, but has only surfaced now as the
B-side to an MC Lyte track.
Brooklynite Wayne Pate has sent his mix again, and it's sounding mighty
fine. So for a dose of soulful old and new grooves with a good sprinkling of
latin flavour, don't miss Friday's show.
until then
