So, I did this show the other night backing up a young jazzy- nu-soul female singer. (Yes, she was HOT, in case I forget that all-important detail...)
Anyway, she had put together a pretty nice 9 piece group, worked her a-double-ss off getting all the musicians, the rehearsals, everything, and the gig was at a very well known LA nite-spot that I'm sure all listees have probably heard of.
So, this was her first gig at the place, and she was excited, and she asks the soundman if he could pop in a DAT to record the show for her. He says, in front of the whole band, "Well, we'll have to negotiate that... come see me up in the booth..." (Apparently, the club has a no-dat policy...)
The bass player says to her "be nice to that guy or he'll mess with our sound" (or words to that effect.) So, we get done with the soundcheck, and I walk around the back of the club for a bit (you know, to prepare.) When I come back out, the gear (including my gigantic Rhodes) has been moved, the monitor mix is shot, no one can hear anybody, and it sucks. (Although, I guess it sounded good to the audience, so I'll give him that...)
When I talk to the singer after the gig, it turns out that while I was around the way, she had gone up to the soundbooth, and the guy was all over her, (you know, trying to "loosen her up" for the performance) and she had to get the hell out of their quick! What an IDIOT this guy was. I guess our piss-poor monitor mix was "punishment." And of course, no dat.
So, ladies and germs of the aj list... what would u do in a situation like that? How common is it?
My thought would be to let it slide the night of the show, and then call the club manager later in the week... whaddya think?
