Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #83: Strawberries, cherries and an angel's kiss

    Newsflash 08.05.2002

    Dear friends,

It's been a while since we have touched the keyboard for newsletter reasons, but oh boy, we've been busy as ever in the last weeks. Me Shuriken have closed myself in my New Cross room and only left it to spin records with Nigel "MK Ultra" at his splendid Bionic Boogie night at the Charterhouse Bar and a week later with the Further Out mob at Club Thirteen (this night, a jam session of djs and jazz musicians is going monthly now, next time: 11th May). Lotsa juicy jazzfunklatindiscohiphopbrokenbeat gems on the turntables on these nights, great crowd shakin the Booty, fun to be with dj mates spottin the trains, so it was all good, except for my hit and run attitude, which might have even seemed rude. People probably wondered why didn't I just chill out and head for the bar instead of the exit after leaving the dex, but I had no choice, running amok as a loon with Mr. Wolf on my back shouting "Time is a factor!" Had to finish my 15000 words college assignment a week earlier so my laptop was almost melting under
my hands, and even the ticket I bought well in advance for Grandmaster Flash went to waste. This level of dedication and self-torture has helped me to finish my last essay at 4 AM, 30 minutes before the cab arrived to take me to Heathrow.

After crashlanding at Ferihegy (Budapest) I said hi to my family and Keyser and did two days of additional typing (at a top secret Budapest location), this time half-mental because of the lack of sleep, my eyes burning because of monitor radiation overload. Then uncle Keyser and I have played warm up for Richard Dorfmeister and Sugar B, but as our regular mode went, we had to leave the venue before they have finished in order to catch our early morning train to Zagreb (sorry Richard and thanks for all the good stuff!).

Fast forward to early afternoon, Zagreb, the open air terrace of a cafeteria. Pause. Sit back, relax. Watch the most beautiful women in Europe go by. Sip on your capuccinos. Eat strawberries that actually do taste. Watch some more smartly dressed honeys. No talking, no action. This is just the way we have imagined it. The big chill. Now it seems that it was definitely worth dealing with the heavy workload that was close to break us. And this is just the humble warm up session of the jazzors' delight that is to come in the next three nights (and the relaxed days in between), that is the 3rd Kontrapunkt Future Jazz Festival. There is no need to hype this festival, the word is already out there, top djs and live bands can't believe their eyes when this crowd goes wild for the music that usually get expertly head nods and moderate swinging anywhere else. It is now a status thing to play this festival - or the weekly Kontrapunkt club nights - just listen to top nu jazz djs discussing dream gigs in futuristic airp
ort lounges. Thanks for Eddy, Alen, Dus and Sinisa for putting it all together and taking good care of the brothers (for line-up, photos and more info, check: http://kontrapunkt.aquarius.hr). See you soon again Enes, Toni, Sandro, Jazza & Michela, Ozren, Tomster & Pia, Bodoo & Orsi, cop! & Kecske, Alex, Charlie, Rainer, Joe, Shuya & Yoshihiro, Chris & Nell & Pablo and all those lovely people we met on these days. Thanks to our local hosts, Maja and Sanjin for being the cool people you are. Much love to Dunja.

Back to Budapest again with all the sweet memories. Preparing the next Crate Soul Pressure night that will bring Eddy and Dus to Budapest on this Friday. Spinning together at the radio again after such a long time apart. Sipping on capuccinos, relaxing...

...and dreaming about more strawberries, cherries and an angel's kiss in spring...

"Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things

    (Lee):
I walked in town on silver spurs that jingled to a song
that I had only sang to just a few
She saw my silver spurs and said let's pass some time
And I will give to you summer wine
    Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

    (Nancy):
Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
    Ohhh-oh summer wine

    (Lee):
My eyes grew heavy and my lips they could not speak
I tried to get up but I couldn't find my feet
She reassured me with an unfamiliar line
And then she gave to me more summer wine
    Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

When I woke up the sun was shining in my eyes
My silver spurs were gone my head felt twice its size
She took my silver spurs a dollar and a dime
And left me cravin' for more summer wine
    Ohh-oh-oh summer wine"

Words & Music by Lee Hazlewood; Recorded by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, 1967

Keep up drinking your summer wine till next time!
