Hi there. Its Matthew K from Interactive in Glasgow, Scotland here. Been
incredibly busy at Firebird in Glasgow's West End with 4 nights in 2 weeks.
As always the usual Tuesday residency was a night of mostly chilled grooves
but I've used the other occassions to lift the tempo and push as much new
music as possible. Forthcoming dates include this Sunday (26th May) at Ad
Lib on Hope Street, the Pyrotechics nights at Club Alaska and the Bacardi
Tent at the T in the Park Festival in association with the Sub Club on Sun
14th July between 12 - 3pm.
Thanks to all the people who responded to my chart last week. Obviously my
rant about the importance of CDr's hit home to quite a few people. In
response to some of my e mails this week, I would like to point out the
reason for the size of my weekly charts. I am in the lucky position to get
sent a lot of music and also spend a fair amount of money every week keeping
on top of as many good new releases as I can. The quality of the music today
is astounding and its so easy for new records to be lost or overlooked due
to the sheer volume of releases on a weekly basis. Looking at other peoples
charts (especially Cukipapa and Nik Weson) I am always stunned at all these
tracks I have never heard and maybe never will. As such I feel its my duty
to push these tracks I do get and hopefully spread the word. Thats the whole
idea of sending charts in the first place - to expose the music to a wider
audience. Its just an extension of DJing. This may mean that certain tracks
may only appear for a short space of time but that doesn't mean the track is
out of favour. Thankfully I have enough DJ work to play all the new gems
while still retaining the older favourites. Its just that unless I do a top
100 every week (which is just ludicrous) many tracks slip out of the chart
rather fast. I get a buzz out of breaking a new record and my chart reflects
that. Also, the artists / DJ's / labels behind the new music want to know
how its working in the clubs as soon as possible. They need to build up the
hype prior to its release and thats what I try and help do.
Anyway, I hope that resolves that problem and, yes, this weeks chart is
rather big.
Matthew K DJ Chart 20th May 2002
1. Benny III, Kode 9 & Culprit: Fat Larry's Skank (Tempa)
The Tempa label blow us away with an amazing Indian style 2 step monster
with an eerie flute drifting over the top of this dancefloor killer. Watch
out for Kode 9 - a name for the future and be sure to check out the
forthcoming Tempa compilation - the perfect starting place for all those yet
to hear their delights.
2. Moonstar: Dupont Remixes (Compost)
Straight to the Nu Era remix of 'Workin Men's Hustle' where Marc Mack of 4
Hero drops a wonderous Detroit influences broken beat killer. A truly
amazing track from an all round excellent EP.
3. A Bossa Electrica: Tombo in 7/4 (Raw Fusion)
Yet more Swedish wonders from this exceptional new label thats getting big
props from Cukipapa. Latin style but with a very modern twist, the title
track on this 3 track EP is the old classic that instantly brings a smile to
your face. WICKED.
4. Nicole Conte presents Rosalia De Souza: Mariab Moita (Schema)
Nik Weston is sure on the case just now and this is yet another beauty he
has sent me. All three tracks are incredibly funky Brazilian groovers with
the 'Canto De Ossanha' track being the current favourite in the package.
5. Nude: Digitise (Shelflife)
Another release from the Ammunition crew (also home to the likes of Tempa),
this dubby 2 step release looks to the Detroit originators for an inspiring
release. With Zed Bias now on Sirkus and his collaborations with Kaidi
Tathan for Laws Of Motion, watch the 2 step and broken beat scenes hit off
each other for some stunning music.
6. Stereotyp: My Sound (G Stone)
Cheers to Cukipapa for sending me this. After the delights of his 12's,
Stereotyp drops 11 tracks of major dubby buisness. Loads of vocals,
drum'n'bass influences, 2 step sounds and a stunning production job results
in a killer album.
7. Stockhom Cyclo: Electronic Ghetto Twist (Raw Fusion)
Second release from this wicked new label. A bit nu jazz, a bit broken beat,
a bit Underground Resistance - this is where its at. Sure to be a winner
with the likes of Alex Attias, Dego and the likes.
8. Various: Soul Searching II - Tribes Vol. 7 (Infracom)
Other than 'Verve Remixed' and 'Music & Movement' there haven't been many
killer compilations about. This one is and its loaded with treasures over 3
slices of vinyl.
9. Roomtone: Music Against People (Music For Speakers)
This label's output just gets better and better. Roomtone aka Jeroen Kimman
drops a much more jazz orientated release but with Sandor Caron and Aardvark
each producing a track the result is a beautiful hybrid of electronica and
spiritual jazz.
10. Various: Verve Remixed (Verve)
Finally out on vinyl, despite the fact that the official CD release has now
been put back. Every track a winner and with the likes of MJ Cole, King
Britt, Rae & Christian, Joe Claussell, etc at the helm its no surprise.
Makes for compilation of the year, so far.
11. Cinematic Orchestra: Every Day (Ninja Tunes)
Again, now available on vinyl after nearly wearing out my CDr. Sublime album
with the Roots Manuva track being a current favourite.
12. Don Carlos: Hot One (Afro Art)
Still to track down the recent Ballistic Brothers release on Afro Art but
this is a sure fire winner. Very New York clubland, with its killer bassline
and gorgeous flutes this will already be in the boxes of the likes of Kenny
Dope, Joe Clausell and Danny Krivit. ACE.
13. Masora: Game Is Over (ARQ Records)
Excellent UK r'n'b thats up there with the productions of Dodge aka Venus
Tribe. Bit of a mystery release but very sexy and exciting.
14. Gigi: Gud Fella Remixes (Palm Pictures)
Nice to see the re-apperance of some cool new African rhytmns in recent
times. Here Restless Soul are on the mix for an afro house delight. Also
worth checking out the Tony Allen remix.
15. Jazzanova: In Between (JCR / Compost)
Truly glorious and worth the wait. Jazzanova have moved on to give us an
album with jazz and soul gems with a variety of guests. This is what all
future music will sound like one day. You need this.
16. Gerd: Amarelle (Life Enhancing Audio)
This guy is a major talent as anyone who got his album from last year will
testify. 2 new tracks on offer with a slightly more dancefloor feel.
Excellent.
17. Jarvis Church: Run For Your Life (RCA)
Thanks to Adam from Giant Steps for this modern soul beauty with a slightly
reggae feel. Watch out for this guy, he is going to be a star.
18. Various: Afrotronic 2 Sampler (Audiopharm)
4 track sampler from the forthcoming album. I'm really feeling the extremely
deep Aaron Bingle mix of 'Voodoo Bliss' but the wonderous vocal on the
slightly Detroit sounding 'Higha Spirit'. The forthcoming album will also
feature Beatless, Minus 8 & Da Lata so it should be good.
19. Various Artists: 66 Degrees Presents (66 Degrees)
A double vinyl album of current Icelandic house music. For anyone who
thought Iceland's music scene revolved around the leftfield sounds of Bjork
and Sigur Ros, here is where the funk is.
20. Sun Ra: Satellites Are Spinning - Zero DB & Hectic Mix (Mo Smog)
Only on CDr just now but this is blinding. The Zero DB boys do it again,
this time in collaboration with Hectic aka Gilles Peterson on his first
production job. The boy did well.
21. Mr Scruff: Shrimp! (Ninja Tunes)
Long awaited taster from his forthcoming album, this is like a jazz funk
take on early 80's New York clubland. I'm going for the dub mix. This will
be big.
22. Relaxo Abstracto: Inflatable Scream (Music For Speakers)
A new project featuring the collaborative efforts of Aardvark, David Caron
and Sandor Caron. Working together they come up with 3 wicked, melodic,
Detroit style broken beat numbers that will appeal to those adventurous DJ's
out there.
23. Hippiehaus: Maurice Remixes (Jubilee)
Finally out on vinyl after its first appearance on the excellent 'Club
Culture For Urban Listening' compilation CD on Jubilee last year. 4 mixes on
offer, including one from label mates The Havana Boys. Delightful deep
grooves.
24. Recloose: Ain't Changin' (K7)
A sampler from his forthcoming album on K7, with a kind of old school feel
with a broken beat influence. Also has an outrageous Carl Craig mix on the
flip.
25. Quant: Funkster EP (Hollow)
Watch out for this guy. Formally signed to the now defunct Dot label, anyone
who got hold of the (now extremely rare) 'Quantastical Quantasm' album will
realise what a talent he is. Here we get 3 new tracks in the Herbie Hancock
vein. Splendid.
26. Seiji: Loose Lips (Bitasweet)
The Goya crew continue with the gems, with this Bugz in The Attic production
bringing the vocal talents of Lyric L to the fore. One of the most original
things in a while.
27. Sun Ra: Sunset On The Night Of The River Nile - Eddie & Dus Remix (Mo
Smog)
Been looking out for this for a while, so cheers to Paolo at Mo Smog for
sorting me out. Broken beats, manic percussion and the genius of Sun Ra all
together. Its quite scary how well Sun Ra sounds in this modern context.
Excellent.
28. Baaba Maal: Jamma Jenngi / Fa Laay Fanaan (Palm Pictures)
This may have been out for ages now, but I only got it in the post the other
day. With a superb J Walk mix on one side and 2 Ashley Beedle mixes on the
other, it makes for a supreme package.
29. Neon Phusion: Its Another EP (Laws Of Motion)
Bugz in the Attic are on a roll and the moment and here is another gem in
their catalogue with 3 excellent tracks. Their music is just getting better
and better.
30. Joseph Malik: Diverse (Compost)
Local lad drops a stunning long player for the genius Compost label. Reminds
of Terry Callier and Shuggie Otis, it shows that real songs and soul music
are back, but with modern production skills.
31. John Beltram: Americano (Exceptional)
One of the most talented men in electronic music is back with his 4th album,
and shows him moving into even more jazzier territories. This is an
astounding album.
32. Various: Music & Movement Vol 1 (Climate)
Double CD of utterly stunning music, with countless Japanese nuggets finally
getting a release over here. Compiled by Nik Weston, this is the perfect
indicator of where music is just now. With an 8 track vinyl sampler with
most of the highlights included, this is comiplation of the year so far.
33. Bugge Wesseltoft: Change - Chillumanti Mix (Jazzland)
Promo only 12" with a fab remix which retains all the elements of the
original, but works in building up funkier drum patterns.
34. King Britt Presents Obafunke: Bush Workout (Karma Giraffe)
Yet more proof that King Britt is a fully fledged genius. Collaborating with
African musician Obafunke, the result is a 15 minute voodoo groove.
35. Rednose Distrikt: Nana (Hum Hum)
Coming through Rushour this slow motion house track features some awesome
Rhodes action resulting in one of the funkiest tracks in ages.
36. Org: Organic Language (Revirth)
This has probably been floating about for a while but those Japanese 12's
are so hard to track down, I've only just discovered it. Immense production
with broken beats, double bass AND a Calm mix on the flip. AWESOME.
37. Bluprint: Mathis & Tetchener (Exceptional)
These guys are a major talent and this shows how the live musician can
always surprise where samples sometime fail. Watch out for the album due
soon, it will be a gem.
38. Ayro: Drink / Let This (Omoa)
Second release from this exciting new Detroit label. Watch out Jazzanova,
these guys are serious contendors with their broken beat productions.
39. Mutant Soul Records: Jaam Blue Series 3 (Mutant Soul)
Two amazing dancefloor friendly remixes from the Jimpster here. This is
turning out to be a wicked label.
40. Ras: Rhythmic Altered State (Best Seven)
Forthcoming on this Sonar Kollktiv offshoot, this CDr shows yet another
genius talent from the Jazzanova family.
41. Plej: Sampler CD 2000 (CDr)
These guys are going to be massive. Following the release of their mega rare
debut 12" (does anyone actually own a copy) they follow it up with a taster
of their future releases. These guys need to be signed.
42. Jazzanova: Days To Come - Ian O'Brien Mix (CDr)
Mr. O'Brien has now moved to Glasgow, and this is a forthcoming remix from
the much hailed Jazzanova album.
43. Nu Spirit Helsinki: Album Promo (CDr)
Only 100 in circulation and forthcoming on Guidance, this is already going
to be one of the years best albums and we are only in January. Watch out for
it.
44. Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit: Secret Rhythms (Nonplace)
A bit more leftfield than normal for my chart and not particularly
dancefloor, but it features the genius of former Can drummerJaki Liebezeit
with the always interesting Burnt Friedman. Similar in style to Ninja Tunes
Flanger, it features a wicked dub track in 'Rastafahndung'.
45. Marschmellows: Flash Fried (Audiopharm)
Always a reliable outfit, here they are again with another winner. Lovely
sweeping synths over an off-beat house groove, while the Needs
re-interpretation takes it into peak floor house territories.
46. Deep Dive Corp: Beware of Fake Gurus (Jubilee)
This really is an interesting label, never failing to surprise. Here is
another fine example with a dubby / post rock / deep house crossover!!! The
end result is an excellent backroom groover that will certainly raise an
eyebrow.
47. Sao Benitez: State Of Independance (Mr Bongo)
Until such times as the Mitchell and Dewbery project is signed up, this will
keep us going. A Ben Mitchell production, covering the Donna Summer classic,
this will bring the sun out. Watch out for new Da Lata remixes as well.
48. Zero 7: Distractions - Remixes Part 2 (Ultimate Dillema)
While the Koop remix looks destined never to make an official release (just
need to keep hitting that CDr) here is another mix from the Bugz crew and a
surprising acoustic, chilled re-interpretation from the Idjut Boys.
49. The Herbaliser: Something Wicked (Ninja Tunes)
One of the highlights from the recent album, this is a brilliant choice of
single with its jazzy flavours and almost operatic vocals. However its the
Agent K (aka Kaidi Tatham) remix of 'Mr Holmes' thats the real gem with an
old school funk flavoured killer that shows another side to Tatham's genius.
50. Ben Horn: Stripped Down (Voodoo)
Back in the chart again, this is staying firmly at the front of the box.
More Norwegian talent slipping through with this jazz infested slow house
groover.
This chart is sent to hundereds of press publications, magazines, labels,
DJ's producers, and promotion companies throughout the world on a weekly
