Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #85: Crate Soul Train
Newsflash 29.05.2002
Dear friends,
The Crate Soul Train just won't stop! If you read the playlist of our last radio show carefully you can realise that we played two brand new Crate Soul Brothers remixes. One of them was made for Erik Sumo, who is no one else but Ambrus Tövisházi(http://ordogok.pardey.org/shandy/main.htm), the third member of the CSB production team. People often think that those brothers are just we, Keyser & Shuriken, but to tell you the truth it's not an accident we chose another name as we have always involved other producers and musicians into our work. But now it's time to speak about Ambrus, whose first four-track EP on Pulver Recordings of Stuttgart, Germany (http://www.pulver-rec.com) is just released and already on the playlist of such heroes like Nickodemus (RhythmLove Records), Reini Wimmer (Spinning Wheel Records), Jürgen Drimal (Vienna Scientists) and the mighty Zsolt Palotai (godfather of all djs in Hungary). We have also just finished another rework for Tipsy; the craziest exo!
tica/easy listening cut'n'paste project of all time, whose remix album will be soon released on Asphodel. Thanks & respect for Dave!
Nuff cdr bizness in this week's radio show, but listen with care to the weird remixes of IG Culture, Seiji and Attica Blues! What do they take? Anyway, it's the new Quantic album which is on the top of my list now...
This week's newsletter needs no xtra reading as here come Shuriken's party bits:
Sorry for being lazy and missing out on the newsletter biz for a lot, but I guess it won't be back to normal until September when I move home to Budapest. London offers too much excitement, it's hard to keep focused. About two weeks ago we had a lovely little night with the Further Out mob, as our clubnight seems to go monthly at Club Thirteen. Thanks to everybody who came down. Thanx to Richard E for giving a brother like me a residency in this competitive city.
I also spent numerous nights checking out the London nightlife (something my studies hadn't quite let in the last 2 months). The worst experience was certainly trying to get a ticket for an absolutely sold out dj Shadow gig. The evil peddlers wanted 50L for a ticket, a price I certainly couldn't afford, so after 30 mins of hopeless asking I left the scene heading South on the Chatring Cross road, only to witness Josh Davies getting out of a cab a few hundred meters from the venue. I played around with the thought of storming him like a senseless groupie on tons of MDMA, but soon I dropped this foolish thought and let him proceed on his way. You don't see your idols every day, so it's not at all strange that I got a bit confused.
However a few days after I met some freaks and icons at Bar Kemia, a super posh Moroccan styled place where dZihan and Kamien played splendid sets. Those Viennese icons played a few new tunes from their forthcoming album that got many of the freaks trainspotting. Thank you for the friendly attitude boys!
The mighty Herbaliser also had something wicked coming our way at the Forum on Friday. Sold out again, but the peddlers were easier on the prices, so we somehow got a deal. The band rocked a crowd with a monster of a session as usual. Almost like a classic big band (see the absolutely amazing line-up at http://www.herbaliser.com/herbaliser/lineup.shtml, but with more head banging beats. Phi Life Cypher made a guest appearance; just like on the new Herbaliser album, but the greatest thing on Earth that night was Ms Seaming To's charming stage presence and the amazing range of her voice. And of course Kaidi Tatham's unique way of shakin his booty. DJ Spinna was also spinning that night, so it couldn't have been much better. We want more.
I spent the weekend tracing Kaidi's and Spinna's trail just to end up at Gilles Peterson and Benji B's Worldwide night at Cargo on Sunday. Kaidi was behind the keys again, to take the crowd with a storm with Izzi Dunn (you bet they did). Twisted West London boogie with a cello to spice it up. After the gig, Spinna has played an eclectic set that has stretched from obscure funk breaks and classic hip hop tunes to as far as West London broken beat. Another great night out.
Yesterday I saw Koop at Jazz Cafe thanks to Dom Servini (the international dj gigolo in the pink shirt) who was the one-man dj support, with dj bag full of champion tunes (England beats Sweden?). Ms Yukimi Nagano and the Swedish boys (one of the most driving jazz formations today) are hard to beat though, as their syncopated rhythms still keep ringing in my ears today. Earl Zinger has only TRIED to steal the show.
OK, I'll stop teasing you. Isn't London a crazy place? Imagine how much I suffer when I HAVE TO study. I don't even buy Time Out, to ease the pain, however good friends always send nasty e-mails about upcoming events to freak me out.
Don't stop till next time!
