Ow, this fire is hot. Dum dee dum. Ow, this fire is hot. La di da. Ow, this
fire is still hot! What's going on??
To me, it's not about exclusion of one kind of music, but rather inclusion of
many many other kinds. I have a looooong laundry list of music I want to learn
about, that's not even to speak of music whose very existence I have yet to
discover, and pop radio is just not a priority for me. And erm, if I hate the
music every time I go to the grocery store, and I hate the music every time I'm
in someone's car with the radio on, and I hate the music every time my radio
loses its station memory and I flip thorugh, and I hate all the musical acts on
all the late night comedy shows, and I hate the music every time I see a dumb
commercial, and I've hated commercial radio every previous time I've made an
attempt to listen, and I love the music that I listen to, and seeking it out and
enjoying it occupies all of my free energy, and if I generally prefer to spend
my time loving rather than hating, how do ya reckon I'll spend my available
resources of time and money? Hey, it ain't my fault I happen to have the same
taste as alleged snobs, although I consistently find people with similar tastes
to be some of the nicest, most open people I've met. The same social phenomenon
happened when drum and bass, indie rock, and hardcore wereyoung. I suspect it
happened over and over before my time with every exciting new development. I
don't dare attempt to explain the correlation. If anything, aren't your average
mainstream listeners snobby, if we're defining snob as someone who only enjoys
their little cadre?
If snobs don't waste their time on things that consistently make them feel like
they're covered in molasses and dirt every time they come in contact, and choose
to stick with the wandering paths that make them feel a centimeter closer to
bliss, then get me a tee shirt with SNOB all over the front! Tattoo it on my
forehead and let me get back to what fascinates me, because the world is
enormous, history is long, and there is too much incredible stuff there for me
to discover in one lifetime. I'm happy to let you sort through the top 40s muck
if you enjoy it and tell me what's worth listening to, same as I'll take
classical suggestions from my trumpeter friend who understands my tastes, but
with the signal to noise ratio of pop, it's not something I can afford to invest
in.
By the way, I love Missy. Still play the Ganja Kru rmx of Hit Em. Actually, if
you're going to get me a tee shirt, can you make it say "I've got my own ride
and a trunk full of tunes"?
Jeroen, you are right on redirecting the focus: What I'm feeling this week is at
http://www.beleza-music.org/vivid/bb_radio.html. Banda Favela was the biggest
surprise!! Where did they come from?? (well, Italy yeah, but...???) And I just
got wind of Floetry...
