STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

OK, so this is a bit late. This is actually the newsletter and playlist for
Stylin on 25 October. As I said on the show, I had lost the tracklisting for
I:Cube's mix and I wanted to get hold of that before I sent the newsletter.
I even cleaned the car in an attempt to find it. (That was a long time
coming!) Fortunately, the wonderful Didier at Versatile has come through for
    me on email (thanks!).

I:Cube's music has always borne the influence of soulful techno, and he
worked some of that style in with added deep house spice for his mix for
Stylin. As well as his albums (including a remixes collection) which are
available through Versatile, lookout for his collaborations with label boss
Gilb'r as Chateau Flight including their incredible and underrated remix of
    Bebel Gilberto's "August Day Song".

A personal tale for Trainspotters' Corner ... When the other kids at school
had "The Smiths", "The Cure" and "Metallica" written all over their school
bags and pencil cases, I had "Detroit Techno". When rave culture hit
Melbourne a few years later, many of these kids started going out to dance
parties, taking E's and all of that, while I continued to follow the music.
But while techno in the early days was generally something pure and soulful
and meant Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and then a few hip
Brits like LFO, it didn't take long for rave culture to breed a new form of
techno that was either far too cheesy or far too dark for soulboys like me.
(Let's not forget that one of the first great promoters of the Detroit
Techno sound was a former northern soul DJ, Neil Rushton). Underground
Resistance were being touted as one of the new wave of Detroit
labels/producers, but I must have only come across their harder style
releases like "Gyroscopic" and "The Punisher". While I was busy chasing
anything that bore Carl Craig's name, I had no idea that former jazz
musician and UR frontman, Mad Mike, was putting out an incredible series of
EPs called "Nation 2 Nation", "World 2 World" and "Galaxy 2 Galaxy" in
between all the hardness. Someone soon worded me up on "Hi Tech Jazz" which
appeared on 1994's "Galaxy 2 Galaxy" EP which led me to the even more
wonderful "Star Sailing" on the same EP. "Hi Tech Jazz" became part of the
description for Stylin (see the top of the newsletter) and has now been
released in a live version with plenty of live saxophonics over the bouncy
    techno grooves.

    until then
