Greetings,
First , a reminder that next week we'll be running a special mix set
from Beat Solér, aka Seelenluft.
Hailing from Zurich, Beat has been associated with the city's art
scene for some time and evolved musically from punk - to soundtracks
- to drum & bass - to what you'll discover on his most recent
recordings - a potpourri of jazz, trip-hop, lounge and experimental
sounds that are tied together with a sly sense of humor that borders
on zany. The most recent Seelenluft album, "Out Of The Woods," has
been one of my favorites of this past year, but his other Klein
releases, "The Rise & Fall Of Silvercity Bob" and the
"Synchronschwimmer EP" are equally delightful and well worth checking
out. For more info, go to http://www.kleinrecords.com, or
http://www.seelenluft.com.
Tonight's program is light on new albums, but we do have the debut,
self-titled release from Italy's Fragment Orchestra. If you didn't
get around to picking up their previous two EPs, don't worry - all
six tracks plus four new songs are included on the CD. The
juxtaposition of downtempo and jazz is like peanut butter and
chocolate to one's ears - creamy, rich and delicious!
Speaking of sweet, "Pure Cane Sugar" is the new album by Sugarman
Three & Co. and like their previous Daptone releases, is another
slamming hunk of fun(k) with guest appearances from Lee Fields,
Bernard Purdie, Charles Bradley and Naomi Davis. The band returns to
S.F. as part of the San Francisco Funk Festival
(http://www.sffunk.com) on 11/23 and will be throwin' down old
skool-style at the Elbo Room, with DJ Vinnie Esparza. We'll have
tickets next week.
I'm no expert when it comes to drum & bass, but the new Roni Size
album, "Touching Down" feels like a monster. RS is primarily solo
throughout sixteen tracks - all of which are mixed together for
maximum impact. Want to feel like a jungle brother? Pick this one up.
Crucial singles: Mystery Sound Ensemble's Web page comes up short on
background info, but their debut EP, "Esoteric Sound Suite Vol.1" has
intriguing jazzy vibes and some ominous trip-hoppity grooves that I
find irresistible, so I'll have to drop them a line to learn more.
Ditto for Bathysphere's "Daylight Shrubbery" EP, that's described
thusly by their label: "...Zero 7 are kidnapped by Boards of Canada
and held captive in Lee Perry's Studio." Add to this particularly apt
description, the fact that Quantic, Baby Mammoth and Leggo Beast have
each contributed remixes for their last three recordings and you'll
have a pretty good idea of what to expect.....
Earlier this year I was very excited about a compilation called
"Kindai-Tek(i)" from Japan's Bambola imprint. Now, a collaboration
between Bambola and the Chillscape label has resulted in a new 12"
called simply, "The Remixes." The A-side is a moody uptempo number by
Shiba that's been reworked by Ski Oakenfull in London. The flip is
Chillscape label-meister Kay Nakayama (aka Intelligent Jazz) with a
slow, funky jam that's given the re-rub by Jimpster (Jamie O'Dell).
Both are excellent and bode well for future releases in 2003.
Finally, we'll have tickets for this weekend's live performance by
Blue States and I Am The World Trade Center. Both appear at Studio Z
this Friday night.
Ciao for now,
David
