STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

My apologies for being super-late with this newsletter for not last week's
show but the week before. (Last week's is coming soon too!). Also apologies
to anyone whose emails I have not yet replied too - I'm getting there ...
I've been absorbed for the last few weeks with finishing a remix of SHQ's
"Cubano Chant" for the Cosmic Sounds Remixed project, which I can happily
    premiere on this week's show.

But what about Stylin 60? Well, what a hoot it was to be joined in the
studio by Liz Millar and Eddie Mac, two of the key figures behind the
fabulously fun and funky WOW sessions (not forgetting DJ Dicko). They were
celebrating their first birthday at the Public Office and like the night
itself, their Stylin appearance featured top soulful house tunes, Eddie
freestyling on the mic and general chaotic behaviour. You can get the WOW
newsletter by emailing welovewow@aol.com. Liz is an ex-RRR-er herself and
one of my favourite DJs and radio presenters, not to mention having given me
one of my first club gigs at her classic night Egg (an early incarnation of
which also involved RRR's Brewster B). Meanwhile Eddie has been exploring
more leftfield and jazz-based sounds at his excellent "New Forms" night at
    Pure in Smith Street.

Also on Stylin 60 was a mini-showcase of the Brazilian label Trama, with a
trio of great albums just out blending bossa, soul, jazz and contemporary
electronic production. "Outro" is the second album from Jair Oliveira,
former child star (as Jairzinho) and son of Jair Rodrigues who recorded the
3-part "Dois Na Bossa" series with the legendary Elis Regina for Philips in
the mid-60s. After having received the remix treatment from Brazilıs drum
and bass royalty DJs Marky and Patife, Max de Castro also returns with his
second album "Orchestra Klaxon". I chose the tune which tested my Portuguese
to the limit - a blend of drum and bass rhythms, big band horn arrangements
and melodies borrowed from Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powellıs evergreen
"Berimbau". Finally Patricia Marx comes with "Respirar" featuring two tracks
produced by Londonıs 4 Hero, my favourite being "Dona Musica" on which
Patricia is joined on vocals by Wilson Simoninha, son of Wilson Simonal,
veteran of countless bossa, soul and MPB recordings of the 60s and 70s.
Anyone having trouble tracking down Tramaıs releases down under could do
much worse than pick up the excellent Music and Movement 2 (Mumo/Shock),
this time put together by Jazz FM's Mike Chadwick and featuring two tracks
from Trama alongside other current Brazilian talents like Ed Motta and Paula
Lima, as well as recent favourites from MAW, Quant and others.

    Now for newsletter 61 ...

    take care
    Ennio Styles
