This only affects the folks in Southern California directly, but I can’t
help but think it’s a step back in our cause. It’s a shame that Gilles’
preaching will no longer bless the airwaves of Los Angeles. What’s even
more of a shame is the music that replaces him – how much bland
“electronica” can one city take? Here’s a letter I wrote to the KCRW
management. It’s important to me that Gilles’ fans stand up for the show.
If not for the tried and true fans (I’ll always listen to the Radio One
stream anyway), for the people who will now never have their first taste of
Jazzanova, Bugz in the Attic, Peven Everett, Domu, Mr. Scruff, Patife and
Markey, Neptunes, Phil Asher, Cinematic Orchestra, Vikter Duplaix, Koop,
etc. etc. etc.

KCRW:

Worldwide began my love affair with KCRW. I was always proud that KCRW
carried the best radio show on earth. Membership and volunteering for the
pledge drives became part of my yearly ritual. I appreciate the work of
Jason, Garth and Nic, but Gilles Peterson is in a class by himself. KCRW dj
’s play many, many songs culled from Worldwide. By removing this show from
the air, not only are you preventing new KCRW listeners from being
introduced to the show, but you are denying the influence that this show has
on KCRW’s playlist.

I emailed Jason Bentley a few times asking why Worldwide was given such a
horrible time slot. The demographic that loves Gilles Peterson is out on
the town Saturday nights – did you ever really give the people of LA a
chance to fall in love with the show?

Worldwide is inspired, cutting edge, beautiful stuff. KCRW recognized this
for many years, and I thank you for that. It’s a shame that KCRW no longer
sees the necessity of this amazing program. KCRW remains a wonderful source
for enriching music – only now less so.
