I have been aware that Worldwide was potentially going to get pulled for
awhile, hearing rumors from some folks including a few from the AJ list.
Last week, I've received confirmation of this as part of an email reply
from someone on an unrelated matter.
My understanding the first time Worldwide was pulled from KCRW a few
years back was due to lack of support. I've listened to the show during
their pledge drives back then, and apparently there weren't enough
listeners calling in for the powers-that-be to justify keeping it on the
air.
Since I'm outside of L.A., I can't say whether or not the results ended
up being similar. It seems to me that shows that get a good amount of
pledges and listeners during pledge drives are strong determinants of
whether or not a show will be heard in the future. If you listen to the
DJs during that period, they keep repeating that point over and over.
The fact of the matter is that if KCRW doesn't support Worldwide, then
there should be another entity that will. Unfortunately, it may not have
the reach and influence that KCRW has...but it will be a West Coast
home, nevertheless. Personally, it would be ideal for KCRW to keep
Worldwide there. But, barring any last-minute reprieves, they seem to be
moving on.
It'll be interesting to find out how this all turns out in the end.
