Greetings,
I'm tired.....a good tired, but still tired....It all began on
Thursday evening, when I was able to lure Andy Carthy (aka Mr.
Scruff), down to the studio with promises of gourmet pies an a pint.
We had a nice chat, played some great tunes (including a hefty chunk
of "Trouser Jazz") and many laughs. You can hear our conversation
tonight, beginning around 10:30 pm. In case you haven't yet visited
the Web site, check out http://www.mrscruff.com for the latest news,
a complete discography and the coolest screensaver ever. We should
also mention that the aforementioned Scruff and Treva Whateva will
begin hosting a weekly radio program on Manchester's Key 103,
Saturday nights from 7-9 pm (GMT+1), starting November 9th. Listen
live at: http://www.key103.co.uk/. Thanks again to Andy and manager
extraordinaire, Gary McClarnan for making it all happen.
Friday, we headed off to Nob Hill's Masonic auditorium for an
outstanding show by Caitano Veloso - part of the San Francisco Jazz
Festival, now 20 years strong. The adoring audience was as loud as
the Angels' fans in Anaheim and refused to let him leave the stage.
After the gig, we headed off to Club Six for Mr. Scruff's marathon DJ
set that was sho' nuff funky, y'all. We stumbled home after too many
Manhattans and hit the sack sometime after 4 am.
Saturday it was back to the Masonic for a fantastic double bill from
Branford Marsalis and the great, great Wayne Shorter. Sunday wrapped
up the weekend's jazz triple-header with another trip to the Masonic
to see one of the world's greatest drummers - Elvin Jones
(celebrating his 75th birthday) and a rare appearance by the McCoy
Tyner Big Band. Jazz fans will know that both Elvin and McCoy were
part of John Coltrane's group while he was signed to Atlantic Records
and recorded many of the classics he's known for today, so it was a
treat to see the two of them perform the encore together - an awesome
rendition of "Afro Blue." After returning home, we watched the latest
episode of "The Sopranos" and sadly, mourned the Giants' World Series
loss.
Monday it was off to Bimbo's 365 Club for another Ninja Tune night,
starring Amon Tobin, Prefuse 73 and Bonobo. The club was packed, the
XLR8R crew was in the house and all the artists were dope.
That brings us to this evening's show where musically, there are
excellent new albums from Juryman, Paloma, Nils Petter Molvaer, Peven
Everett, Dubarachnoid Trim and a handful of cool singles, too
(reviews next week). I hope you'll tune in, live or via the Net.
Ciao for now,
David
