Benji B's show is awesome. I can't get enough of it. It's different from Gilles' show in that it feels much more urban. This may be due to the fact that he tends to concentrate much more on hip-hop and 2-step and heavy heavy beat-driven tunes. The thing I love most about his show is every week he will throw in some gems from the golden age of hip-hop and soul too. He's not hung up on only introducing the new sounds. He seems to have a bit of the Brownswood bug every week.
His mixing is the most noticeable difference from Gilles'. In short, he can do it pretty well. Something Mr. Peterson is improving on live but on the radio still does not profess to be a 'master' at. But I wouldn't go so far as to say Benji's show is a LOT fresher. I'd bet Benji could almost compete with the Jazzanova boys in terms of mixing prowess btwn all genres but he does play large blocks of the aforementioned hip-hop, or other similar type beats. Gilles' style is slightly different. He's not reluctant to play something really downtempo, then throw in hip-hop, then go on to latin, 2-step, deep house, neo-soul (just look at his recent Muzik magazine cd. I think it's titled BROKENFOLKFUNK...). There are no boundaries.
All in all, I love the fact that Benji is rising up. He's gonna be a MAJOR player in years to come. He's got skillz to spare. Hope he starts doing remixes and more re-edits.
But don't forget the man with the 'golden ears', Mr. Peterson. His voice is like butter. I remember first hearing him on Radio 1 when I lived in England for a year. I thought he was a brutha! Benji is improving weekly I think, really loosening up. LOL to both of those cats. They make life much more musical for me.
