-- source: JazzReview Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto Pay Tribute to Brazilian Greats with A Day in New York News Story by: Brazil Nut For Immediate Release A DAY IN NEW YORK CAPTURES THE EXCITEMENT OF MORELENBAUM2/SAKAMOTO'S INTERNATIONAL TOUR PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF LEGENDARY BRAZILIAN COMPOSERS (New York, NY, April 9, 2003) Recorded in a single day, A Day in New York catches the collaboration of the trio Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto at its finest...only hours after the last live performance of an acclaimed international tour following the release of Casa, its recording of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. A Day in New York will be released on Tuesday, May 27, 2003. Jaques and Paula Morelenbaum, who are husband and wife, have long associations with Jobim, Veloso, Gilberto, and Sakamoto. The recording of their first CD under the group name Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto, Casa in Jobim's home in Rio de Janeiro came about after an impromptu jam session at the end of an international tour for Sakamoto's recording BTTB, for which Jaques Morelenbaum joined the pianist. In touring the world to support their release of Casa, the trio, joined by guitarist Luiz Brasil and percussionist Marcelo Costa, discovered that they had reached a new level of collaboration in Jobim's music. The Casa tour was scheduled to end with a performance at the renovated Winter Garden at New York's World Financial Center on November 6, 2002, but no one wanted the dream to end so soon. The next day the group got together one last time before going their separate ways to record their live set, capturing the experience of the tour and new insights into the music. They're all thrilled to have the opportunity to share the result of what transpired on November 7, 2002 with you.A Day in New York. The new recording not only features classics from Antonio Carlos Jobim like Desafinado, Insensatez, and Chega de Saudade, but also honors two other Brazilian legends with inspired interpretations of João Gilberto's Bim Bom, and Caetano Veloso's Coraçao Vagabundo. Ryuichi Sakamoto's Tango makes an appearance here as well, featuring Portuguese lyrics for the first time. The CD features three bonus tracks: new recordings of Sabiá, Samba do Avião, and Fotografia. Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto reunites on June 14 with a performance at the Fujitsu Concord Jazz Festival's Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz at Carnegie Hall in New York, followed by an extensive European tour. The Fujitsu Concord Jazz Fest features performances by Gal Costa, Michael Feinstein, and an all-star band. The group will also host two special shows on June 15th at Joe's Pub in NYC, venture out to Williamsburg, Brooklyn for a performance at Warsaw on the 16th, and then begins an extensive European tour. Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto's A Day in New York will be featured at the official CD site: AdayInNYC.com. The site will include album art, track listings, sound clips, multimedia features and more.
