Jol/’Moody Aow’ (cd)
April/Timewarp
Swedish producer Jo(e)l Eriksson better known as Jol drops his debut “Moody
Aow” on the Danish April imprint. For those who don’t know (that small
readership), Gothenburg currently is establishing itself as one of Europe’s
centres of sophisticated electronic music. With a community (calling their
world “Gonkyburg”) of almost a dozen young and extremely talented producers,
DJs and musicians now seeing the time right for releasing their debut
albums. Jol proudly being part of the expanding Swedish Gonkyburg music
collective. He actually, together with his colleague/fellow citizen/friend
Quant, gave birth to the ‘Gonkyborg’-expression. You might know him from
releases such as “Think Tin” or “Noodles In The Microwave” on that other
Swedish label Dot, or appearances on compilations such as Free Zone 5 (under
his former Star moniker with the ‘B.B. Smooth’ tune), Nik Weston’s Music &
Movement vol. 1, Nordic Exposure & Companionship vol. 1. Maybe his most
recent and well-received “Cool Cat” on Quango, with remixes from Butti 49
and Swell Session, might ring a bell. Nevertheless, this boy is here to
stay. “Moody Aow” is an album brimming over with lush electronic grooves,
compelling sound-scapes (culminating on the excellent closing title-track)
and funky downtempo beats. The opener ‘Going Down’ immediately sucks you
into that moody atmosphere with its modern jazz programming, combining funky
beats with lush keys. The fact that he has been involved in producing
soundtracks definitely shines through on his first longplayer, meaning: he
creates atmospheres without loosing the album’s view as a whole. From the
catchy ‘Cool Cat’, via the funky electronics of ‘B.B. Smooth’ up to the
sweet broken candy ‘Think Tin’ and ‘Kids In The Song’ (which succeeds in
bringing my love for Zero 7 to the surface), Jol manages to capture our
train of thought, portraying him as a very talented musician with a great
sense of melody and balance. Gonkyborg does it again.
‘’Moody Aow” will be released on April (Release Date: 15.09.2003) and
distributed by Timewarp
