STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
I'm back at last after missing the last 5 weeks of Stylin, so there's lots
of catching up to do. Massive thanks go out to PJR and Dave Sinclair for
keeping the seat warm in fine soulful style. You can check PJR as part of
Underground Flavas each Saturday night from 10pm-12am on RRR. Dave can be
heard spinning in various spots around town including First Floor and the
odd spot with us at Open Sesame.
For those that hadn't heard, I've spent the last few weeks in Japan and
Europe, spinning tunes, swapping tunes, buying tunes and trying to get my
mind off tunes (that didn't work). Last week was a taste of what I've picked
up, but there are still parcels on their way from Tokyo, London and Paris
with more, much more.
I caught up with lots of great people every stop along the way, but special
thanks have to go out to the following for their help and generosity: Mika,
Ali, Seven Sounds & Ultralounge posse; Andy Mitchell, Lily & Jimmy; Kenji @
Especial; Minoru Yanai & Tomoko; Yoshi; Kenichi Yanai; Spankie Dion & Maki
Hazard; Mitsuru Ogawa; Koichi Ozaki; Hiroshi Fukuma; Shuya Okino; Iketch;
Emmanuelle & Patrick; Zeljko Kerleta; Dom Servini; Mark Robertson; Kevin
Beadle; Ben Wilcox; Chris, Tony & Tom @ Hospital; Russ Jones; Nik Weston;
Spencer @ Goya; Mark de Clive-Lowe; Masaya, Yasuhiro & Taro (Jazzy Sport
crew); Charlie & JP @ Vinyl Junkies; Gerry O'Rourke; Huw Bowles; Chrissie
Murray; Sandra Bignon; Arnaud @ Ya Basta; Volker Meitz & Sabine; Juergen,
Claas, Matthias, Daniel & Sonar Kollektiv crew. (I know I've forgotten
people here, 'cause that's what I do - forget).
One of the biggest tunes everywhere I went was Max Sedgley's "Happy", so
what better way to open than to have this in Trainspotters' Corner. Eddie
Kendricks' 1975 Motown original is actually a rather cheesy disco pop number
so I couldn't go through with playing the whole thing. But Max takes a nice
snippet of the vocal and then constructs a monster tune which has got just
the right blend of heavy drums, sinister left-hand rhodes, dramatic horns
and dirty funk. It's on 12" on the Irma label which seems to be in very fine
form at the moment. Also look out for Max's older tune "Ego Spiritual" under
his Cadien alias. And do check the link to the Eddie Kendricks Memorial
Foundation, which celebrates Eddie Kendricks Day each year while helping
"educate our youth of the harmful effects of smoking"!

Beating Nicola Conte to the post office was his Schema labelmate and
super-collector Gerardo Frisina. Tune in for Gerardo's mix of killer jazz
rarities (and more of my travel booty) tomorrow.
until then
