    Jon Freer’s Reviews. 13th August 2003.

Thanks to Anton at Trailer Media, Nic Conef, Nik
Weston, Paul & Kirsti at Ether &
    Miriam at Inca for these................

Mettle Music – Moodswings (Bar De Lune)
Cat No: LUNE26CD. Release Date: 22nd September
    2003.
“Moodswings” acts as a welcomed summer hangover (if
a hangover can ever be desired, that is!). The gorgeous
laidback grooves and summery funked-up cuts are a
perfect reminder of those sun-kissed lazy days. “Pacific
Motion” is an aurally velvet textured cut, with delightful
keys, a purring bass, stylish guitar and a miss-firing flute.
“El Mar” calls on the singing talents of Susanna Montero
from Malena, whose sugary vocals soar over smart
splintered beats, soothing guitars, water droplet keys
and precise string cuts. “Latin Horns” uses chugging
breaks, marauding acoustic guitar, jamming brass and
elegant partying keys to create a fiesta-loving track.
Picking up where the “Honeycomb Lounge” left off, their
second LP is another enthralling selection of down right
    spirit lifting tracks.

Ohm Guru – I Wonder (Irma On Canvas)
Cat No: IC208. Release Date: 25th August 2003.
Italian native Ricky Rinaldi’s new album “Echo” gets the
once over from a global assortment of remixers. The
choice re-rubs on this 12” are courtesy of German beat
technician’s Fauna Flash and London’s esteemed
Jimpster. Fauna Flash turn “I Wonder” into a
unforgettable strained vocal escapade, with gritty
percussion, synth hits, up beat harp like keys and a
durable sinister bass. Jamie ‘Jimpster’ Odell’s re-rub of
“Heart & Soul” places bright smiling keys, defiant yet
hard to believe vocals and falling synths over a dirty
    slurping bass and sluggish beats.

Easy Access Orchestra – Las Chicas (Irma On Canvas)
Cat No: IC 210. Release Date: 8th September 2003.
‘Easy’ gives an insight into the Orchestra’s sound.
Layering sound upon sound to produce a fairly unstable
mound of lackadaisical smooth slumber inducing
sounds, the Orchestra get a well needed kick up the
posterior on this release. King Kooba touch up “Las
Chicas” with an eerie flute, insistent guitars, active
clapped percussion and blinding FX swirls to create a
much more energetic number. Flying Fish’s revision
sees a gorgeous trumpet, smiling strings, cute keys and
a growling bass combine on a jazzified journey.

Fernanda Porto - Fernanda Porto (Trama)
Cat No: T 004/590-2. Release Date: 15th September
    2003.
This LP from Fernanda Porto shows that she’s more
than just a figurehead for the twangy bass liquid funk
styled grooves of Brazilian D&B. More than just a voice
and a face like many singers who receive media
acclaim, Fernanda produced and played many
instruments on this album as well! “De Costas Pro
Mundo” uses a staggered amen and distinct beats to
give it a D&B vibe, while upbeat vocals, a stunning sax
and spacey synths give it the extra edge. The emotion
in Fernanda’s voice is as apparent as the beauty of the
bare guitar, melancholic piano and wandering strings on
“O Amor Não Cala”. “So Tinha De Ser Com Voce” is an
exposed composition where smooth vocals and a
following guitar combine with clicked breaks and a
concealed bass. It is clear for all to see that Fernanda
Porto is a musical mastermind as well as an exquisite
    assured vocalist!

    Private Lounge Volume 5 (Apricot)
    Available Now.
Marc Ricci brings us another selection of relaxing
deeper House grooves and downtempo snoozers in the
form of the fifth volume of the Private Lounge series.
This is another venerable selection of delights from
Marc, who picks out some choice, if little known, gems.
Eon’s “Femme Fatale” warns of the problem with dating
your ‘ideal’ partner, as lazing keys lounge, guitars
groove and a beautiful sax suggests it will work out fine.
Zeb’s “The Water & The Sun” celebrates nature,
courtesy of feet dragging percussion, fuzzy bass, all
consuming guitar and cutting synths. The ‘Martinez
Aquarium Dub’ of Physics “Don’t Deny My Love” wishes
the rejections would end, as a heavenly sax, fanatical
vocals, serious low end beats and amazing strings
    combine. A commendable selection.
