Senior moments have become a part of life these days, so it's no surprise that I totally spaced out and forgot that FreeFall had passed the three-year mark several weeks ago. So......Happy Anniversary to.....me /us/it.......whatever. After all this time, I'm seriously beginning to think about some sort of syndication on other radio stations to complement our current Internet broadcasts. I'll be sure to keep you posted as developments occur.

I get a fair amount of music from the U.S. and Europe on a regular basis, so it was a surprise to find a package from Israel in my mailbox the other day. Fellow DJ Nadav Ravid hosts a nightly program on the national radio station and he, along with Malkiel Grossman formed Polar Pair. Their album Cresh covers a lot of musical territory - from breaks to dub to bossa to abstract beats and does so very well. I'm looking forward to our listeners' reactions to this unexpected treat from the Middle East.

Speaking of abstract beats, Emulatory Whoredom from DJ Wally (aka Pish Posh) fits that description to a T. His latest collection of downtempo jams and sound sculptures was supposedly inspired by the events of 9/11 and there's a definite flirtation with sounds that are slightly more dissonant and unsettling than in his previous work.

On a similar tip, but with more orchestration is The End Of Sorrow by Keno-1. Also working in the hip-hop idiom, Keno-1 utilizes live guitar and violin, giving the songs a more weighty and melancholic edge. Fans of the Tru Thoughts label will know his other pseudonym - Natural Self, from remix work for Quantic and several singles under his own moniker.

There are also two very perky new releases: one is Georg Levin's debut full-length, Can't Hold Back that touches upon sounds from the past 30 years and brings them all together in a very modern way.
You've heard his remix work (with partner Dixon) as Wahoo and earlier singles, such as "Somebody New" with Clara Hill on vocals.

Mint is the second album from French producer / DJ Alexkid and is delightfully sexy inna deep house stylee. He knows the ins and outs of a good floor-filler, as well his way around a slow jam and Mint strikes a nice balance between the two.

Finally, The Civil War is a major departure for local experimental duo Matmos. Probably their least minimal recording to date, 19th century musical themes are juxtaposed with medieval melodies and 21st century electronics for an album that defies description. Having just seen these guys accompany Bjork on her current summer tour, I'm eager to witness a show that's dedicated to their recent compositions exclusively.

There are lots of tickets for the locals, including upcoming shows at Studio Z, The Elbo Room and more, so be sure to be listening.

Until next time - ciao for now,
    David
