STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
It was a nice treat to be joined in the studio last week by Tom Churchill,
known for his Emoticon and Headspace record labels and productions under his
own name. He even jumped on the decks for a bit, keeping true to the sound
of his labels with some deep techno and abstract broken beats. Look out for
the excellent new album from Russ Gabriel set for release on Emoticon next
year (but already in the hands of 2 lucky RRR subscribers who won copies on
the show). Russ seems to have found the right middle ground between his jazz
and techno leanings, and his drum programming is getting even more tight.
Also soon come is a second EP from Otomi, who were responsible for my other
favourite Emoticon release. More deep electronic grooves with a subtlety and
space that reminds me a little of Australia's very talented Microworld.
Thanks to Dan Beck for hooking it all up.

Trainspotters' Corner didn't stray too far from this sound with a cut from
the new I:Cube album "3" (his third album, I'd guess). There's a killer
electro jazz tune called "La Folle Blanche" which I should play for you this
week, but we had "Oblivion" which takes a snippet of bassline from "No Way
Back" by Adonis, a very early Chicago house classic from 1986. "No Way Back"
has entered many a sampler over the years. In 1987 it was taken for the
track "Do It Properly" by 2 Puerto Ricans, A Blackman and A Dominican, an
alias for Robert Clivilles and David Cole (who would later become C&C Music
Factory) along with David Morales. Adonis' response was to take "Do It
Properly" and release under his own name. Who could argue?

This week may be the first time Stylin presents a guest mix recorded during
a live DJ set. It will be from Brighton (south of England not south of
Melbourne) DJ and Mr Bongo/Disorient label head, Gav Smith, recorded earlier
this year at Notting Hill Carnival in London. Hopefully the sun will be
shining on Friday at midday. Gav will be visiting our shores next week for a
set at Open Sesame on Thursday 18th.
until then
