STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

Before started to put together my favourite tunes of the year (and a couple
that missed out last year), I had a feeling the list was going to be
dominated by hip hop, soul and r&b. Well as it turned out these styles were
certainly well represented, but overall it was still the usual mix of Stylin
flavours with house, broken beat, samba, funk, cut & paste, techno, afrobeat
and jazz all in there. No drum & bass this year, although I did think it was
a little disappointing that my 2 favourite d&b tunes were bootlegs (remixes
of Sister Nancy and Busta & Mariah). The others that missed out narrowly but
deserve a special mention were the labels Gamm (Sweden) and Props (US via
Japan), Alison Crockett's soul burner "Like Rain" and new remixers on the
scene, Yam Who. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from all of these in 2004.

Thanks to everyone who's been with Stylin for the last 3 year-end roundups,
and welcome to everyone who's just joined us this year. Thanks to all the
labels, distributors, artists, DJs and producers who have again contributed
to Stylin with promos, mixes, giveaways and interviews. Thanks to all the
RRR subscribers and sponsors without whom there could be no Stylin. This
support has also helped RRR to acquire a new DJ mixer which has allowed the
likes of Jazzy Jeff, ?uestlove, Tom Churchill and Darshan Jesrani to play
live sets on the show. With RRR moving to new premises in 2004, more
assistance will be needed, so please contact me or the station if you can
help. Thanks to all the clubs, promoters and DJs who have invited me to play
and given me the opportunity to share music with the dancers. Thanks to all
the press who have published my charts, listings and written reviews. It was
nice to see Stylin take out Best Radio Show in the Zebra 2003 Writers' Poll
this week. Finally, thanks to Katya and all my friends and family for
everything they do behind the scenes.

There's lots more goodness just around the corner. I've decided to take a
break from next week's show, but Stylin will be well looked after as always
by PJR and possibly also Dave Sinclair. I'll return the following week for
my first Stylin of 2004 with one of the originators of the whole jazz dance
scene - Paul Murphy. Open Sesame returns to Honkytonks on Thursday 15
January with Kano and myself joined by Chris Gill from Northside,
Melbourne's funkiest record store. Local People EP 002 will drop early in
the new year and I have 2 more remixes almost ready to roll.

Hope you're all looking forward to 2004 as much as I am. Have a great new
year. See you on the other side.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
