Greetings,
I'll begin this week with some great news: our friends at Flaresound
have resumed their online broadcasts after going dark for six months.
They have re-emerged as Netmusique (http://netmusique.com) with two
channels (Housemusique and Jazzmusique) available 24/7. What's even
better is, FreeFall can now be heard Thursdays on Jazzmusique at the
following times:
8:00am PST; 11:00am EST; 5:00pm GMT. A big thanks to Jeff and
everyone else at Netmusique. Welcome back!
Germany rules: In the box this week are two new compilations from
Berlin's Crippled Dick Hot Wax. The first, "Give Peas A Chance,"
brings together 21 jazz and funk nuggets from '60s and '70s German TV
and film soundtracks. The second - "Jeff Recordings," collects music
recorded in Peru and Trinidad by Jeff Nieckau, a German sound
engineer who spent 15 years abroad training broadcast personnel and
upgrading recording studios. In the course of his work, he
established some close relationships with the local musicians and
captured some inspired performances. This album is a joy to listen to
and the extensive liner notes written by Nieckau offer a great deal
of insight into events that shaped his musical tastes and that took
him to the places where he made his auditory discoveries. Big up to
Svetlana for sending these my way!
"Playlist" is new from Jazzanova-Compost Records and offers up 15
tracks from the label, put together by Jazzanova. A fine overview,
"Playlist" contains album cuts and 12" mixes from a broad selection
of artists who have recorded for JCR over the past five years.
The other big release is via the Sonar Kollectiv imprint Dialog.
Reunion are Swedish bassist / producer Jens Loden (also a member of
Damn) and jazz pianist Mathias Landaeus who since 1999, have only
released three 12"s under their own name. "Re:" is their debut album
and a magnificent one at that. With a wide range of tempo and
texture, Reunion set new standards for the often-maligned 'nu-jazz'
genre. From Klaus Doldinger-inspired riffs and a surprise clarinet
solo, to gospel-like funk and smoov grooves, there's a lot to like
about this album.
Before her recent Neotropic show, Riz Maslen passed along a CD-R of
works-in-progress from the Council Folk label that she created along
with partner Paul Jason Fredricks, Their philosophy is to find music
that juxtaposes acoustic and electronic elements and that promotes an
independent ethic. That certainly is the case with the selections on
the disc and we'll be sampling some of them in the weeks to come.
That night we were also treated to a set by Ollo, an Australian duo
(Alex Crowfoot and Lars Chresta) whose debut album "Sleeper,"
features some warm electronica and glitchy beats. We'll check them
out as well.
In the singles bag are jams from Raw Deal, Universal Funk, DJ Krush,
a sampler EP from "Phonography 2" (the latest re-make / re-model
project from producer DJ Smash), N.E.R.D. remixed by Zero 7 and many
more surprises.
Until next time, ciao for now,
David
