STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

While I was asleep from 6-8am last Friday, it was still Thursday night in
Frankfurt, Germany. One of the best things about Thursday nights in
Frankfurt is the chance to check out Soulpatrol, the radio show hosted by
former Stylin guest Michael Rutten. According to his playlist, if you were
tuned in last week, you would have heard Gilles Peterson's "Impressed" Jazz
Mix, and then towards the end of the show Break Reform's "Metropolis"
followed by Yusef Lateef's "Eboness". About 4 hours later it was time for
Stylin, which started with Break Reform's "Metropolis" followed by Yusef
Lateef's "Eboness". Shortly after I went into Gilles Peterson's "Impressed"
    Jazz Mix.

This just reminded me that even though we can't always find the right words
to describe it, there definitely is a global connection between people who
understand this music. And it feels good to be a part of it. I've got peeps
in LA, Strassbourg, Tokyo, Wellington, London, Bari, Oslo, Stockholm,
Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, Munich, Berlin, Shanghai, New York,
Toronto, Brighton, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Paris, Copenhagen,
Konstanz, Freiburg and nuff other spots who know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, enough about cosmic alignments and onto the music. The Break
Reform/Yusef Lateef thing was for Trainspotters' Corner. After a string of
quality EPs, Break Reform are set to release their first album on their own
Abstract Blue label. With a jazz-hip hop-female vocals combo that sits
somewhere between Koop and Portishead, the album works in passages from deep
jazz records of the 60s and 70s, including Yusef Lateefıs beautiful
    "Eboness" on the track "Metropolis".

Gilles Peterson delved deep into his jazz bag with his mix of moody modal
moments. If you enjoyed that selection then I highly recommend his new
compilation "Impressed with Gilles Peterson", a gathering of 60s and early
70s British jazz which is probably Gilles' deepest comp since Talkin Jazz 3.
This is of course just one side of the man who has been at the forefront of
this global movement I was talking about for over 20 years. You can hear him
"joining the dots" between these diverse sounds of old and new on his weekly
radio show, Worldwide. It was good timing to have this mix just as Gilles
visited Melbourne, so I took the opportunity to get in an interview too. He
now heads back to continue each of his current compilation series, so we can
look forward to Impressed Vol 2 (Universal Jazz), GP04 (Trust the DJ/Stomp)
and Worldwide Programme 3 (Talkin Loud/Universal). He has also done the
cover CD for the March edition of Muzik. After finishing his role with
Talkin Loud, Gilles is now planning a new label which he is hoping to launch
later this year. And after dabbling in production under the "Hectic" alias,
Gilles is getting prepared to record an album which he describes as "my
Nuyorican Soul, something to reflect all the stages of my DJing career". It
    all sounds good.

This week I'll have a mix from Tru Thoughts recording artist Quantic, whose
tune "Not So Blue" was one of my favourties of 2002.
