    My impression, that I believe I got from my Elizabethan-England-expert middle
    school english teacher, was that dresses for women stuck b/c of easy access??
    To, y'know, the goods. It certainly wasn't out of utility or warmth, I can tell
    you that. Menstruation certainly could have had an influence considering the
    sub-par sanitary conditions. But consider me not a costume and dress expert.
