Hello all,
Very sorry to say that the Liquidator site is temporarily down due to server
problems, but should be back up by Monday at the latest (hopefully sooner),
and I'll be transferring to a new server within the next week to prevent
this from happening again. So please keep checking back.
On to the subject at hand, I contemplated skipping the guide this week
also because as often happens at the start of a new year, it's a relatively
slow week‹everywhere but NYC once again. For anyone who missed Pucho
tonight, the week is still mighty sick, with the man Roy Ayers tomorrow,
Mark Murphy Thursday-Saturday, and the lustrous pairings of David Sanchez +
Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Danilo Perez + Nicholas Payton later in the week.
In Chicago, the mighty hip-hop bill of Djinji Brown (now of some lovely
afro-centric breaks, and formerly on the production end of some of the most
radiant/sublime hip-hop tracks ever back in the period from '94-'96‹check
the Tjader-sampling Supernatural track "Buddha Blessed It" for proof),
J-Live (one of the best MCs of '02 through his work with JazzyJeff), and the
Artifacts' El Da Sensei is most certainly essential.
For anyone in L.A., the godly Miss Anita O'Day does her first date in
the city in at least 8 months. Anyone who cares anything about the vocal
side of jazz should see Anita at least once while we've still got the
chance. The lady's been near death more than a few times, but she keeps
coming back stronger than ever, and not only is she thankfully apparently
unstoppable and still astoundingly vocally agile, she's really the last of
the original generation of female vocal titans that included Peggy Lee,
Ella, Sarah, Lorez, Carmen, Billie, June Christy, Betty Carter, Rosemary
Clooney, et. al. (Before anyone jumps down my throat, Nina, Blossom, and
Abbey Lincoln really came later.) So show some love for a true legend. Last
I heard she even had an aptly brilliant and kaleidoscopic little
retrospective of rare film with her.
Lastly, since the site's down, I've also included all this week's new
gigs below as something of a salve.
Respectfully,
Brian Baltin
