Hello all,
The sonic landscape in Los Angeles for the next few months is shaping up to
be absolutely, ineffably ridiculous. My agenda through the beginning of
April as it stands now consists of:
DAVID SANCHEZ + GONZALO RUBALCABA, PHAROAH SANDERS, LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES,
PAUL WELLER, LITTLE LOUIE VEGA, DIMITRI FROM PARIS, DJ KRUSH, PAT MARTINO,
KOOP, CHEO FELICIANO, TABLA BEAT SCIENCE, DJ VADIM + RUSSIAN PERCUSSION,
JIMMY BOSCH, and DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER
Can you believe that sh*t???!!!!??? Check the full Los Angeles page for all
the lovely details.
As for this week, all the loveliness is in London, starting with the
stunning vocals of Allison Crockett. You might know her from her '02
dancefloor killer with Landslide, "It's Not Over," but you might not
remember that she was also the voice on the Sylk 130 classics "Seasons
Change" and "New Love." I had the good fortune to see her live on the first
Sylk tour years back, and her voice is sublime, very much on the Julie
Dexter tip, but with a bit more fullness. And then elsewhere in town, it's
another gig for the unstoppable Quantic (with the brilliant Alice Russell,
but possibly without the band) and Bonobo, who themselves did a
ribcage-shattering DJ set in L.A. on the Amon Tobin tour. Not much at all
what you'd expect from their vinyl output. And as if all that wasn't enough
to depress the hell out of those of us who aren't there, there's also
Oneness of Juju, Lewis Taylor, Jean Carn, and a Hospital bill of London
Elektricity and (speaking of) Landslide.
The week in NYC is also on the brilliant side, starting with Gil-Scot's
annual MLK day S.O.B.'s gig‹with Ursula Rucker along. Damn! If you've never
seen Ursula live, she's also much different/better than you might expect,
and the combination of her and Gil-Scot is just plain sick. Elsewhere, Pat
Martino's starting a new round of gigs, and the Juggaknots are out in
Brooklyn.
For anyone else in L.A. who cares anything about Latin/Afro-Cuban jazz, I'd
have to say the pairing of David Sanchez and Gonzalo Rubalcaba should be
mighty/essential.
Respectfully,
Brian Baltin
