    Hello all,

A fair amount of Latin loveliness in NYC this week, including Ray Barreto @
Birdland, the brilliant Chucho Valdes @ the Jazz Gallery, and the great
Willie Colon @ S.O.B.'s. Not anywhere close to all the sublimity hitting
L.A. in March on the Afro-Cuban and salsa front‹Cheo Feliciano, Jimmy
Bosch, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Larry Harlow, the Jazz on the Latin
Side All-Stars, and possibly the man, Eddie Palmieri (conflicting
reports)‹but it's never to wise to sleep on Chucho (for the staggeringly
intricate dexterity) and Willie (for the dancefloor killers) if you care
about the Latin rhythms. Elsewhere in NYC, there's another Tessa Souter show
to speak of (see last week's notes).
And in Los Angeles, the ridiculousness over the next weekend leads off
with Los Amigos Invisibles @ the House of Blues Anaheim on Wednesday and the
Conga Room on Thursday, to be followed by Paul Weller (been anxiously
awaiting the tour) and Little Louie Vega (who returns for his bimonthly Deep
residency‹with what's being billed as "live performances from the "Elements
of Life" LP for Marques's birthday; don't know if it's any of the Nuyorican
Soul band or just a live vocal PA, but either way the album's such a
masterwork, I'm sure as hell looking forward to finding out). Elsewhere in
L.A., Pharaoh S. returns to Catalina, and Mariano (the great Nickodemus's
partner @ NY's Turntables on the Hudson) is @ Bossanova.
And for those in Chicago, the first of the Morcheeba dates is probably
just about to start right now (sorry for the late note, but forget to add it
to last week's mailing, along with Nikki Yeoh in London‹more reason to keep
up with the Guides on the Liquidator site).
Check the Los Angeles Guide for the first news on the Hollywood Bowl
season, including the date for Joao Gilberto!!!!!! Damn... It just keeps
coming. (All thanks and praises due to the maker of your choice.)

    Respectfully,

    Brian Baltin
