Shalom,
Another week is upon us and that means another frantic session at the computer describing what's in store for the following evening....i.e.:
Susumu Yokota: Overhead - The chameleon-like Susumu Yokota ditches the lush ambience of previous releases for a more groove-oriented set. Even though the tempo of every track hovers at or near 124 bpm, there's plenty of diversity in each to keep it interesting. Looping repetitions are used often and create a mesmerizing effect, with "Play Act Circuit," "Soul Cry" and "Golden Mountain" being some of the album's highlights.
The Orb: Bicycles & Tricycles - Dr. Alex Patterson presents another mixed bag of cosmic delights with several rave-friendly stompers and the usual assortment of trippy, dance-floor weirdness. Supposedly, there's no U.S. release date yet and the Japanese version has a bonus track.
Nitin Sawhney: Human - My introduction to Sawhney's work was 1999's brilliant Beyond Skin that dealt is part with the atrocities of war (in particular, Hiroshima) and the search for identity as a Eurasian. His more recent material has been less orchestral and more pop and Human continues that evolution. There are a slew of guest vocalists adding their own seasoning to the mix that incorporates elements of house and trip-hop, set to Brazilian and Indian beats (to name just a couple). This is a beautiful and spiritual disc that will hopefully be released in the U.S. shortly.
V/A: Staedtizism 4 - This continuing series on the wonderful ~scape label always offers up the best in glitchy blip-hop, but the latest edition has a theme and thy name is funk. Safety Scissors, Akufen, Thomas Fehlmann, Jan Jelinek and others get down with their bad selves and have a little fun with the genre. This is not to say that they're not fun-loving guys, but this record spoke both to my head and my feet and that's saying a lot. Keep your eyes our for this one.
On the ticket front, we'll be giving away a couple pair to see Antibalas at the Great American Music Hall on July 5, so be sure and tune in to win.
That's it for now....see you next week - same bat time, same bat channel...
Ciao for now,
David
