hey,
as some of you now know, moby disc santa monica is
closed for business. we had a good time on the
westside, but business is getting pretty tough for
independent stores on that side of town. some of you
remember the penny lane in venice beach and/or 3rd
street promenade, pyramid music (promenade), tempo
(wilshire bl., then 4th st.), and record rover on
venice bl. there's only a few left standing
now--benway in venice, and in westwood penny lane and
rhino (and i'm not getting good news about rhino,
either). there's a few dj-oriented and strictly used
shops, but they don't always appeal to the same
customers we had. oh, and as not to engage in
"hating," i should mention second spin. ok, i've
tried to be fair.
i'm hoping that santa monica (in particular) is
noticing the trend of shops (not only music) shutting
down, and decides to investigate the matter.
fortunately, midnight special bookstore is back, but
that's an anomaly, and they're expecting to have to
move again a few years.
on the bright side, jose and i still have jobs--paul
and ian chose not to make the trek to sherman oaks
with us. the sherman oaks store is more than twice
the size of santa monica, allowing us to stock more,
and hopefully, a bit deeper. come over and see us in
the valley--i start on monday. if you can't make it
over the hill, there's a few westside shops that get
the t-bird stamp of approval--benway in venice, and
hear music on the promenade (not just cause i have
friends that work there, either--the staff is pretty
knowledgeable.)
ok, i think that's about all. if you have any
questions, feel free to hit me back at this addy.
