    Review :: Aco - Irony

the very incredibly different and special new album from ACO. produced
by Iceland's mum, 'Irony' sounds nothing like her previous two albums,
which were both essential progressive and intricate electro-soul/dub
offerings. yet another huge stylistic and sonic shift. the soundscapes
are quite surreal. in all, it's experimental, textured, sparkling,
fanciful, playful, mysterious, layered with depth and glimmering
electronic adornments--all the while warm and delicate. in some ways
like Bjork's 'Vespertine' to a whole new level. and like 'Material'
(produced by Adrian Sherwood), there's some of the Kate Bush vocal
likeness, but pushed even further. just as she brought out the best in
Adrian Sherwood on 'Material,' it seems she's done the same with mum on
'Irony.' takes a whole lot of listens to digest, but it may reveal
itself to be one of the year's most impressive.

    Aco -- Irony . . . CD
    Sony (Japan), 2003
Very introspective work from Japanese singer Aco -- more atmospheric and
moody than some of her previous albums, and recorded with a sound that
we didn't know she had! The style is slow and building -- very organic
at times, and almost like the best work of David Sylvian -- but Aco's
vocals have a style that's at once ethereal soulful, and as the album
progresses, she shapeshifts into a variety of moods and colors. Titles
include "Lang", "Hans", "Irony", "Kitchen", and "00000".
