    Jon Freer’s Reviews 27th June 2003.

Thanks to Steve At Timewarp, Nik Weston and Lauren at Warp for these...

Rednose Distrikt – Iller Dan Je Ouders (Kindred Spirits)
    Cat No: KS001CD. Out Now.
Hip Hop beat sensibility meets future jazz experimentation and twisted Detroit grooves for a spliff or two, in the smoker’s paradise of Amsterdam. Rednose put have put Holland’s capital on the fractured beat musical map, showing the place has more to offer than choice herbs and a notorious red-light district. “Gotta Make A Move” calls on Lady Alma, who demands action from those male admirers making eyes at her, over a woozy intoxicated synth, spitting bass and exaggerated handclap percussion. “Mo’s” sees pointed hulking percussion get down and jam alongside a grumpy bass, insistent puppeteered keys and backwards splintered vocals. “Tea For Two” invites the listener to share a pot of Earl Grey, as ambitious beats inspire, persistent keys keep at it, drawn-out strings instil fear and elasticised bass movings twang. Frighteningly out of the ordinary, yet so special and irresistible because of it.

United Future Organisation – Suite Espagnole (Exceptional)
Cat No: EXEC 31. Release Date: 7th July 2003.
Off the back of the admirable technofied oriental grooves of “Transworld”, UFO flip the musical script and unleash “Suite Espagnole”, a salsa inspired slice of future D&B. The original sees a polite Cuban guitar hook up with over-stretched almost militant brass crescendos, commanding vocals, calm bright keys and punching breaks. The ‘Spiritual South Mix’ sees non-stop claps applaud attention grabbing vocals, blasted brass, pots & pans beats and slowed hopping keys.

Stockholm Cyclo – Music Is All This (Head To Toe)
Cat No: TOE 08. Release Date: 30th June 2003.
Alexander Stahle sums up the thrill and sensations that music can bring to an incalculable amount of people, with this hard-hitting electro-jazz outing on Head To Toe. The ‘Electro Boogie Mix’ is a robotic jam for droids and their friends, with electrified prodding breaks, heavenly digital synth stabs, beautifully smooth yet excitingly raw keys and an all-conquering heavily energised bass. Kabuki tells it like it is on his remix, where vocodered vocals speak the truth, angered unkempt beats crash, a threatening bass menaces and a rambling guitar finds its place.

Novo Tempo & Koichi Ozaki – Novo Tempo Meets Eurasian Suite
(Eurasian Suite). Cat No: EP 003. Release Date: 7th July 2003.
Still in its infancy, Koichi Ozaki’s Eurasian Suite is already a highly regarded imprint, and this collaboratory EP of amazing musical brilliance is certainly worth tracking down. Koichi’s own “Misturada (Dedicated To Okinawa)” is a mind-blowing slice of beauty, with true heartening keys, jabbing kit percussion, whispering bass and a melancholic story telling guitar. Novo Tempo’s “Moss” is a flute-driven contemplative cut, where a bold exposed bass guitar, resting lopsided percussion and golden guitar smiles meet.

Prefuse 73 – One Word Extinguisher (Warp)
    Cat No: WARP105. Out Now.
Probably not related to the social activist and beat poet Gil, Scott Herren offers a loosely hippety hoppity based multi-faceted assault on all the senses. Allowing the scope for enough experimentation without losing the audience along the way, “One Word Extinguisher” is a refreshing look at the musical world in which we live. “Busy Signal (Make You Go Bombing Mix)” sees Scott combine with Daedelus, and the pair have created a frantic beatbox colliding battleground, where intense hitting keys, gripping strings, childhood fairytale vibraphone and live bass duet duck to avoid the vocal bullets. “Why I Love You” attempts, but fails to convey any reasoning, as cut up dulcet R’n’B honeyed vocal tones, bombarding keys and bounced breaks get lost in blissful feelings created by the attraction. “Storm Returns”, a collaboration with Tommy Guerrero, is a down to earth percussed number, where spinning strings and a liquefied bass under-pin an emotional guitar. Remarkable!
