Greetings,
As luck would have it, I more than made up for missing my show two weeks ago by filling in for Andrew and Tomas on Friday Night Sessions a few nights ago. Both playlists are posted below and as soon as the encoding process is finished, FNS will go up in the Live365 archives alongside last week's FreeFall, for a total of 4 hours, 17 minutes.
There are some wonderful new releases this week, beginning with "take me aosis - A Nite Out In London" - a collection of jazz and funk from the Japanese Aosis label, put together by 'Nippon Nik' Weston. Rare 12" cuts and obscure b-sides that trade for obscene amounts of money on eBay can be found here and while not being familiar with most of the artists, I was knocked out by virtually every track. Goya music has picked up the distribution rights and it should be available via mail order and from your local dealers beginning next week. Way to go, Nik!
The always-excellent Cosmic Sounds London have released "CD 12 Inches 01," bringing together four of their most popular vinyl releases for the first time on CD. Outstanding tracks from Alexandar Rostotsky, Arkestra One, So Hayashi and Dusko Goykovich appear in their original form, together with remixes by Butti 49, Da Vibez Boys and label-meister Zeljko Kerleta. If you missed the singles the first time around, here's a chance to catch up.
Baby Mammoth are back with "Octo Muck," on their new label, Ecco Chamber. No real surprises here - there are plenty of laid-back grooves that slip and slide their way into your consciousness, but a few uptempo numbers add extra flavor to the mix, along with some clever, strategically placed samples.
I don't know anything about the members of Loopless, but their self-titled album on Portugal's Nylon label is a delightful surprise. Elements of jazz, lounge and house (stop me if you've heard this one before) are all creatively arranged and the female vocalist can sing with nuance and power. Someone's compared their sound to the Bobby Hughes Combination and/or Nuspirt Helsinki and they're not far off the mark. Keep an eye out for this one.
Singles-wise, there's "Original Black Magic" from Infekto that's an absolute stormer. This is peak hour material that is guaranteed to provoke much screaming from the dance floor. A big, big record.....Unforscene return with the lovely "Trying" - a superb ballad that gets a new and different twist thanks to the Landslide remix....Carl Craig & Pepe Braddock take turns fooling around with Cesaria Evora's "Angola," but strangely enough, she's not credited anywhere.....dope versions, anyway......Breakin' Bread's Keno-I & The Hermet drop two slices of super-greazy funk with their new 7" "Heavy, Heavy" b/w "The Hardest Rain," and Jimpster re-works "Loopaddiction" from Japan's Force Of Nature with his usual magic touch.
Well time for me to toddle off to dreamland...
Ciao for now,
David
