---- ADDRESS FOR MUSICAL SUBMISSIONS To jump right to the mailing address for musical submissions, please scroll toward the bottom of this circular for more information. ---- NEWS Things have been quite busy for me of late, so let's fill you in... Last night's show should be online by the end of this weekend, along with the playlist. Due to a special weekend event at KCPR, Urban Landscapes will be off-air on Friday May 16. We'll resume on Friday May 23 as we head into Memorial Day Weekend here in the States. THE URBAN LANDSCAPES GUEST MIX: MITCHELL, DEWBURY, & WEST OF CENTRE On that date, we'll resume The Urban Landscapes Guest Mix. If you've been listening, you know that I've been playing the UK-based duo Ben Mitchell & Russ Dewbury for some time--whether it's "Jazz Is Your Life" on Canada's Do Right, or tunes from their forthcoming long-player "Rapping With The Gods" (and also the first single from the album, the extended version of "Globetrotter"). I'll drop the first of two mixes we have of each of them. Ben Mitchell's mix will air Friday May 23, and Russ Dewbury's mix will air on Friday June 6. Another guest mix will drop on Friday May 30. The UK-based label Inspirit Music will soon roll out "InSoul Session Vol. 2," a mixed compilation featuring the duo known as West of Centre (Dave Haynes & Tom McCarthy). You'll hear a little mix set from them on that week's broadcast, so be sure to tune in. Lest we forget that soon, the quarterly rewind shows are nipping at my heels! Since we are approaching the halfway mark of this year 2003, we'll jump instead straight to the highlights of 2003 thus far. Part One of the Halfway Rewind Show, focusing on the albums, will be broadcasted on Friday June 20. Part Two, focusing on the singles & EPs, will air on Friday June 27. ANOTHER GROOVE EVENT Soon to come...Saturday June 7 here in SLO, to be precise. Plus soon I'll be announcing an event happening in late July with one of the major forces in the underground dance scene. Stay close. ---- THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS Yep, crunch time again! Had to pull six reviews in order to refine them. You should see them in the next circular, to drop later this weekend or early next week. And there'll be a few more added to boot--so check it! Various Artists--Take Me Aosis: A Night In London (Aosis/UK) UK-based DJ NIk Weston is known as quite a collector and purveyor of rare and unreleased Japanese releases. He continues to attempt to bridge the gap with this new compilation from Aosis. "A Night In Japanese" has a lot of tasty goods, from straight-ahead jazz to Latin to groovy uptempo delights. Mighty fine numbers here. Nik knows how to go for quality, and indeed quality is what you'll hear on this collection as his digs into the collection of Japanese label Aosis. Delightful and phat all at once! Mitchell & Dewbury--Rapping With The Gods (Mumo/UK) Yeah, yeah...Ben Mitchell & Russ Dewbury has given us some nice ones such as "Jazz Is Your Life" and the awesome remix of Hipnosis's "My Words." After dropping the "Globetrotter" stormer of a 12", we now get the full album treatment in "Rapping With The Gods" from the duo. Goes all over the place in terms of the tempo, but definitely on the groove/funk/jazz lineage. "Jazz Is Your Life" is here, as is the anthem-like "Globetrotter." Guests also include Fertile Ground. Need I say more? Various Artists--Torch (Six Degrees) Very nice compilation from SF's Six Degrees, and a nice change of pace musically. This one is a batch of modern torch songs, and the rawness and music makes a potent combination that really does work out. Many of the artists showcased in this compilation have tunes that differ from their better-known sounds. You won't hear house or drum n'bass or any of those hard sounds here, but you'll definitely hear some really good music with a smoldering, late-night feel. Smoldering, one would say! Rima--This World (JCR/Compost) Domu from West London & Volcov from Italy...quite the combination that realy does work well for Compost. They are together as Rima for the album forthcoming from Compost called "This World." They do the biz quite well wtih their combined talent, recruit some great musical talents to boot such as Mark de Clive-Lowe, Kaidi Tatham & Ian O'Brien, while vocalists such as Julie Dexter & Nicola Kramer lend their gifts of gab. Without a doubt, two great tastes that go well together! Various Artists--DJ Soul Slinger Presents Ecosystem: The Brazilian Joint (Liquid Sky) DOPE! I really am enjoying this one...strong Brazilian Drum n'Bass biz in this compilation from DJ Soul Slinger. This album is inspired by an event that he & Greenpeace organized that took place in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. It was a free event that drew 45,000 folks over four days, and the music apparently was just as fresh. If the energy on this comp is anything like the event was, I'm there! Heavy bass damage comes from Drumagick as well, who contributes a couple of tunes as well as some fine remixes. I really hope this gets released on vinyl in due time, but all the same this can blow up the joint! Fertile Ground--Illumnination Remixes (Counterpoint/UK) Various Artists--Fertile Ground Remixed (Counterpoint CD-R/UK) No sooner was I about to review the "Illumination" remixes did I receive in the mail the full-length that's forthcoming from Counterpoint. Some previously-released favorites from Kaidi Tatham, Jazztronik, & Waiwan are here. They go up there with new ones from Ayro, Seiji, & Gucciman. Fertile Ground also does a nice Afrobeat mix, as well, of Illumination (available on the recent 12"). As if Fertile Ground weren't good enough, these remixes give respectable flavor to the originals. Various Artists--Jazzanova Remixed (JCR/Compost) You know you want this. Been listening to this one for several weeks, and I dare say it's an essential to add to your collection. It's very much a "who's who" of a remix lineup, taking on tunes mostly from Jazzanova's "In Between" debut album from last year. You get not one, but two CDs full of delights from the likes of DJ DSL, Madlib, Bugz In The Attic, Beanfield, Stereolab, and many others. Vinyl junkies should keep their eyes peel for the double vinyl that has (I believe) nine tracks in all...mainly those previously unreleased, including the Bugz mix. Oh la la! J. Boogie's Dubtronic Science--Try Me 12" (Om) Nice and groovy new downbeat single from J. Boogie from the forthcoming debut album on San Francisco's Om label. Really soulful vocals from <>, while <> speaks without obscuring the music. Then a couple of label mates give the tune some treatment--People Under The Stairs is solid on the remix front with some spacey hip-hop tastiness, while King Kooba add some trippy dub-laced basslines in its remix. I'm feeling this baby rather nicely. Stateless--The Art of No State (Freerange/Ubiquity) Andreas Saag leads the pack of the talented Gonkyburg crew by coming out of the gate with the worldwide release of his debut album under Stateless, his jazzy/house alias. He's better known as Swell Session (add the "s" for some other peeps in the mix), but however you remember him he's definitely the talk of the underground jazzy dance scene. "The Art of No State" has some solid backing from the likes of some dope vocalists including his girlfriend Elsa, Ernesto and his girl Mimi, and even Yukimi drops her gorgeous vocals. Grab this one when it drops stateside this month, or look for it on Freerange in Europe. Hold on...the Swell Session long-player will also drop this year too! ---- VELANCHE'S SOUNDSCAPES FOR MAY 2003 (in no particular order) -Spacek--Vintage Hi-Tech (!K7) -Break Reform--Fractures 2xLP (Abstract Blue/UK) -Hipnosis--EP 12" (Perfect Toy/Germany) -Various Artists--DJ Soul Slinger Presents Ecosystem: The Brazilian Joint (Liquid Sky) -Unforscene--Tryin': Landslide Remix (Kudos/UK) -Various Artists--Suite For Weldon EP 12" (Stones Throw) -Various Artists--Take Me Aosis: A Night In London (Aosis/UK) -Mitchell & Dewbury--Rapping With The Gods (Mumo/UK) -Rima--This World: full-length & 12" (JCR/Compost) -Madlib--Shades of Blue EP 12" (Blue Note) -The First Floor Brothers--Fashionably Late 12" (Citrona) -The Dutch Rhythm Combo--Go Dutch EP 12" (Pulver/Germany) -I:Cube--Vacuum Jackers EP (Versatile CD-R/France) -Various Artists--Jazzanova Remixed (JCR/Compost) -Phil Parnell--Runaway: Bugge Wesseltoft & mantis Recordings Filmix 12" (Mantis white/UK) -Joakim--Come Into My Kitchen EP (Versatile CD-R/France) -J.
