STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

Apologies for getting so behind with the newsletters. So now you'll get two
in a row, starting with this one from 2 weeks ago, when I featured the
"Pathless Soulful International Mayhem Radio Show Vol 1" by Gerd & DJ
Pathless from 4Lux Recordings in the Netherlands. As promised, I have their
great commentary on each track beneath the playlist. Only thing to mention
is that Moon Orchestra is from Norway not Australia - I guess it's not so
strange that they found it in Norway then! If any of the punctuation looks
funny, blame Microsoft not me. Also be on the lookout for Gerd's remix album
"Modified", out soon on LEA/Stomp and featuring the great remix of Heavenly
Social for all the Dwele fans. Some interesting new releases also to come on
their 4 Lux record label, as previewed in the mix.
    http://www.4lux.com

This show was also the return of Trainspotters' Corner. Top Italian label
Schema has just released a 12" by new artist Paolo Fedreghini with 2
versions of "Please Don't Leave", a jazz vocal groover originally recorded
by the Clarke-Boland Sextet in the mid-60s for their ultra-rare "Music for
the Small Hours" LP. If you want to save yourself a four-figure sum for the
original, and also get the equally rare "Swing im Bahnhof" album thrown in,
then I recommend the Rearward Schema reissue "Calypso Blues". Of
Fedreghini's new versions, I prefer the clubbier Midnight Mood Session,
which was apparently inspired by labelmate Gerardo Frisina.

***** Pathless Soulful International Mayhem Radio Show 1
By Gerd & DJ Pathless *****

Basically this isnıt a dj mix. Itıs more like a show reel of things we
collected, received, cherished and loved over the last decade or soŠ Music
which proves to be made through resourceful and creative minds, whether it
is jazz-funk, soul, library, bossa, hip hop or classical,Š it doesnıt
    matterŠ
What makes this show reel special? Well, we made some different versions of
some of the tracks, also we did some crazy stuff during mixes from one track
to the other sometimes using three different tracks at the same time.
Anyway, We are about to release the Gerd remix album due June next. To
promote this we made this cd-r. Hoping that you guys could air this (or a
part of it) during your show(s). Would be greatly appreciated! We prepared
this show with much love, attention and devotionŠ so, we hope you enjoy
this. Thanks for supporting us and our label 4lux!!!

    Track listing:

    1. David Snell Crab Apple Jam (LP, State rec.)
Great library record from the 70ıs. Nice harp & warm bass. Simply awesome
vibes to start this show reel with. Weıre really into harping. Harp-records
from the 60ıs, 70ıs, 80ıs and 90ıs. Bossa with harp, Ragga with harp, French
music with harp, everything with a harp.
Our next show will be harp-songs onlyŠ

    2. Jukka Tolonen The Sea (LP, Love Rec.)
Exquisite Norwegian Jazz from the 70ıs. This original is quite hard to find.
But Säkhö did a re-issue last year.

    3. Sandboy The Hike (12" Hinterland)
One of our favourite records from last year. Through Germany, the beautiful
voice of Marishka Phillips comes to us! The new Ursula Rucker?

    4. Innershape Operator Attica Blues Mix (12" Bootleg)
This is (along with Atticaıs mix for Spacekıs ŒEveı) one of our favourite
Attica remixes out there. Extremely rare mix by Attica Blues, this is. We
guess thereıs never been an official release of this one, but we donıt know
that for sureŠ maybe you can tell us. What we do know is that it has been
released on an English compilation. And itıs been bootlegged, so here it isŠ

    5. Apeanaut Fever (12" Redbud)
We heard this one being played by Dorfmeister during the Drum & Rhythm
festival in the Netherlands. We went nuts on this one, shaking our heads to
the ska bass and dub effects.
Up till then we never heard of this track and we found it by accident
listening to some radio show or something J. This is definitely a tune you
have to hear on a massive paŠ
    It rocks andŠ it works!

    6. Protassov A Birdıs Party (12" Switchstance Rec.)
Cool name ŒProtassov.ı Is this fellow from Russia? Anyway, we got this
through Switchstance and it is absolutely gorgeous. It actually reminds us
of one of the earlier David Holmes tracks from his album "Letıs get killed."
Cool tune to shake yer bottom to.

    7. Moon Orchestra The Valley (LP, dBut)
This is tuff breakbeatish nu-jazz from Australiaıs dBut. It is quite hard to
find over here. We actually got it through some mail-order shop in Norway.
We love this one, itıs got energy and every time we play this one out, the
roof is on fire! So, again for big paıs, not really home listening stuff but
definitely worth a play during this show.

    8. Mavenalli Project Bradford Jazz Swiss Mix (12" Toko)
This is a bit of funky breakbeat stuff. We compare this with the stuff that
Gerd did under his ŒBSO Researchı moniker back in the days when he recorded
for Leftfieldıs Hard Hands imprint. Nice!

    9. Vikter Duplaix Looking for love Bugz rmx (12" Hollywood)
Oooh, what a remix. The Bugz remix of 4Heroıs ŒHold it Downı is just awesome
and the Mwela Mwela joint rocks the floor as well. But we play this one most
often. Canıt get enough of it. On the US-pressing of ŒLooking for Loveı
    only, right?

    10. Dwele ft. Bahamadia - ? (CD-r, Virgin)
This is where we reach easier water! After a couple of years of waiting, it
finally looks like we can get this on vinyl! Just got the promos of ŒFind a
wayı but because of the fact weıre die-hard fans of Bahamadia we put this on
the show. By the way whatıs the title of this one? Or is this actually
ŒUntitled?ı Anybody out there who knows?

    11. Def Harmonic Distance Time (12" WobblyHead)
Our favourite label of the mo: WOBBLY HEAD. Creative music from creative
minds. This is underground hip-hop. You can compare this to Fat Daddyıs
ŒChocolate Lover.ı Some nice spacey instrumental hip-hop on there as well!
    Really nice!

    12. Jazzanova ft. Ursula Rucker Forss rmx (CD-r, JCR)
Blown away when we first heard that Soulhack thing coming along. Then Using
Splashes appeared and then the Jazzas making us crazy with some exclusive
things from his upcoming album. This is a really cool and inventive remix by
Forss. In the mean time we received the whole Forss album that will be
    released through Sonar Kollektiv soonŠ
We just love this guy J.

    13. Machine Shop A Discipline of Undertones (12" 4lux)
One of our own things. The problem with both Gerd and DJ Pathless is that we
love to do and/or produce so many different things, we donıt really stick to
one particular style. For example every Gerd remix is different, we hear
people complain, we hear people loving itŠ You never know what you get and
thatıs our problemŠ euhm we guessŠ itıs not a very clever strategy, is it?
Anyway, the same goes for this show: You never know what comes nextŠ

    14. Michael Gordon Weather One pt. 1 (LP, Coalition)
And this is what we meanŠ nice surprises. Many people are specialising in
one particular styleŠ as mentioned above, this is a good strategy. People
always know what you doŠ but thereıs so many interesting things out there.
For instance, we love Indian music, Celtic songs and Ska/Dub. And we dó
listen to classical music from Barber to Chopin, you name it we have it. But
weıve never lost this house feeling. Thatıs why we specifically are into
repetitive modern classical pieces from the likes of Steve Reich and Jocelyn
Pook. During our sets weıre not afraid to tickle the crowds with one or two
Œstrangeı things. Weather One is simply an astonishing piece of art. Itıs
about one hour long, so we sticked to the first session of part one. It
slowly builds like Manuelıs ŒE2-E4.ı (you know the one used by Sueno Latino
:-). Itıs intense, itıs acoustic, itıs mind altering really! Play this one
    loud!

    15. Orlann Divo Beleza Nao Vai Embora (LP, Musidisc)
Quite rare Bossa. Donıt see this one a lot, original that is. To our
knowledge this has only been re-issued through Watts. Re-issues of Don
Cunningham just showed up, the same goes for ŒThe Rallyı from the infamous
Boozy & Hawkes library series, Dorothy Ashbyıs ŒAfro harpingı, Catch Up, Les
Petroleuses, Zimbo Trio, Joe Quijano and a lot, lot, lot of other stuff
(could go on for years, aight?). Now itıs just a matter of time and
treasures like Zitho Rigiıs ŒBerimbauı, LıInfonieıs ŒJıai perduı (already
appeared on cd) and Tjaderıs ŒLaranjaı will be next. On the one hand itıs
sometimes frustrating when youıve put a lot of effort in getting hold of the
original thing and the re-issue shows up. On the other, itıs a good
surrogate to have a re-issue until the moment you find the original J. Letıs
face it: once a collector, always a collector. By the way, this Orlann song
appeared on the compilation ŒBrazilian Love Affair 4ı compiled by Far Outıs
Joe Davids. Really nice comp with that much sought after Œ4hero pres.
Natures Plan ft. Ed Mottaı ŒWithout Words.ı

    16. Joao Donato Nana das Aguas (LP, RCA)
Hereıs another one J. Guess we donıt have to introduce Mr. Donato to you, do
we? In an interview Donato once stated: Bossa is Samba from which weıve
    DDTıd the cockroaches."
Jobim was more generous: "Bossa is a distillery of the samba, a
sophisticated branch. It removed the excess of percussionists. Idf you fill
up all the silences in music, then you have the sound of the roaring ocean
    because everything is filled, packed."

    17. Bah Samba Drifting (Album sampler, Estereo)
Simply awesome track from a simply awesome album!

    18. Velho 4 Vibe Samba (white, 4lux)
This is actually a library kind of thing and we are going to release it
through 4lux. When we play this during our 4lux sets, a smile on everybodyıs
face will appear J. Just a nice vibe. A non-sophisticated track for sunny
    noons and hot, sweaty evenings.

    19. Focus Exagr8 Gerdıs 4lux Remix (CD-r, Versatile)
When we first heard this loop that Phil Asher used for his ŒExagr8ı track,
we were going like Œthis is cool, but it needs some ballsıŠ in a K-scope
wayŠ you know the project on LTJ Bukemıs Cookinı. So we turned it into a
K-scope thing. Just for fun. It turned out that people were going wild on
this mix when we played it out. People simply love the break in the middle
where the beats are filtered to 20hz, or so, and where the trumpet does its
solo. And when the beat finally kicks in again, itıs a mad house on the
floor. Try this in a club and you might get the same result. And again, this
    isnıt for the faint heartedŠ
PLAY THIS AS LOUD AS POSSIBLEŠ NOT FOR LOUSY SOUND SYSTEMS!!!

May the Pathless Soulful International Mayhem guide you! DJ Pathless + Gerd,
    March 2003
